Winter Sowing Report

17 years ago

Our first year WS is a success. Not 100%, but really fun.

The good:

Chard, spinach, calendula, Chinese forget-me-nots, lupine, convolvulus, snapdragons all up and flowering/producing/done (spinach).

The not-so-good: Cauliflower - never formed heads; larkspur - of the 15 transplants, only 1 reached full height, and 2 others were stumpy versions of the real thing. (Don't forget, we had the coldest, wettest June on record.);

Remains to be seen: We have some really healthy carnations that have yet to bloom as of July 31.

Indoor sown this year were all our tomatoes (Belle Star, SunGold, San Marz, some type of cherry and Brandywine, and a gift from neighbors: Pomodoro Costaluto Fiorentino)- all doing great despite the weather; eggplant (Nadia, japanese and minis), and peppers (Anaheims, ristras, Ace Bell, jalapeno and Anchos), all also doing great, but like everything, 10-30 days behind.

Have a look:
