i have grown walla walla, and ever bunching and lisbon, hmmm.... i know there;s a few others. mmmm...very possible!!! LOL :')

We grow perennial bunching onions. We started them from seed (from Kitazawa seed company) and they reseed each year. Easy to collect seed from as well.

We are also growing a red bottle onion from seed we got this year from Hudson seed company.

We haven't grown big bulb type onions because we don't want the extra work of harvest and drying. We've been going for perennial stuff instead that we can leave in the garden bed and pull as needed. In addition to the two already mentioned, we also have yellow potato onions, red shallots, and Egyptian walking onions growing.

After the onion plot got crowded I started interplanting them with my flowers.

All of the types of onions we have could start crossing and mixing - since onions do interbreed readily. We aren't concerned about that because they'll eventually self select for our soil, growing conditions and growing practices.

We're at the point where we can eat onions from our garden year round, but we still do buy some regular onions at the store. In another year or two we should have enough perennial onion here that the only reason to buy a store bought one is if we want a big, uniform, conventional slicing onion.

Onion from seed is easy. I started some in the house, some direct sow, and some almost like winter sowing but done in March and without covering them. The almost WS ones grew the best. Only drwaback was having to tote them into the garage to dodge a late April frost and having to pick baby elm trees out of the pots after the nearby trees cast seed. A clear hefty bag (with a vent slit or two) over the pot flats would have fixed all of the problems.
