Internode Length Question

Is there a simple explanation as to why the internode lengths vary for the same size (diameter and height) culms of the same species? I've especially noticed the length difference on my B. Oldhamii. About six ago I had two shoots, each about two inches in diameter, emerge at the same time, 10 inches apart, on the same plant. Today those two culms are the same height but one has internode length that averages about 6 inches and the other over 12 inches. Thanks for any insight.
