Same thing happened to me with a Phyll. Bambusoides All Gold in a plastic pot. When the rhizome hit the side, it turned vertical (almost) and started growing up like the other culms.

THis is not unusual behavior. This happens in the ground as well as in pots. Just leave it alone. It may turn upwards, it may turn downwards, or it may circle the pot. It'll figure it all out itself without any human intervention.

I am not overly familiar with bamboo, but I like it. Our neighbors planted a thicket on the other side of the fence we share. At least I think it is bamboo, as there have been conflicting opinions. It grew like stink (10 feet tall) and multiplied the same. Now we have some too!(LOL) It has the bamboo-style stalk, hollow and segmented. BUt here is the clincher. I have never heard of bamboo with broad, roundish leaves (your typical "Leaf" shape.) Now it has flowers, little bunches that look almost like pinkish lilac blossoms, only miniature. What could it be? Sorry no pic.

When in doubt always guess japanese knotweed.

It sounds like j. knotweed, not totally sure, maybe someone else will be more sure...... It is for sure not bamboo.

Ask your neighbors what they planted. A lot of people on the forums hate japanese knotweed, but if you like it, enjoy it while it takes over your yard :)

It's clearly not bamboo. My guess is also Japanese knotweed (aka "Mexican bamboo"), an invasive weed. Here is a link with some pictures...tell us what you think:
