It may be too late in the year for it to come up this season. Though I have had some survive underground throughout the winter months, and then put up shoots in the spring.

I buried mine completely, on their sides about an inch or two below the ground. Some survived and some did not. If it has some leaves on it, let them above ground, just be sure it is the top end. Keep the ground moist. Overall, it is easy to grow, at least here in Texas.

well should i put it in a pot or something? cause our zone is colder and especially as a cutting it might not be able to take the cold as a rooted plant.

I got mine from off the road in Louisiana where they had apparently fallen off of one of the harvest trucks. There was ice out at the time, though I don't know how cold tolerant it is.

You could put it in your refrigerator until next Spring, or plant it and see what happens. Do you have a greenhouse? If you do plant it in a pot, plant it upright and water it well. It does like full sun, and I would give it as much as possible at least until it begins to grow. It will also grow in shady areas but not near as vigorously.

I was told that it will sprout roots in a jar of water, but I do not know if this is fact. If the lower nodes have visible roots coming from them, then it should grow for you easily, whether in a pot, in the ground, or possibly in water. These 'air' roots sometimes appear at the nodes above the ground as it does in some bamboos.

Kurt, some cultivars are very attractive. I tried to obtain a black sugar cane and I'll surely get one next year, they look very interesting as an ornamental.

but its a bit cold to plant now, maybe in a lare pot in the house somewhere out of the way, then transplant in early may.

We make homemade syrup from our sugarcane. It can be used to sweeten many canned products.

As kids we used to sneak into the sugarcane patch and cut off a cane to chew on. MMMM, very delicious. It was worth the whipping, IF we got caught.
