Ideally you should have a cool/cold, but frost-free place with some light, to store them. The coolness will keep them dormant and prevent bad mites. With some light they will begin to come to life again by April. I would remove most of the leaves to store them this way, leaving only the top one or two and keep the plants very dry until maybe March, then begin to water sparingly, gradually increasing watering as they begin to start growing again. Set out in May during warm spells in a protected location.

Unfortunately the only dry cool place I have is my garage and its not heated.. It has a little window but for the most part its almost as cold as the outside. I was told to dig them up and dry them out then store them in my basement..I just want to do the right thing.

I would dig them up yes and let them dry but not dry out,leave some dirt in the roots(this will help them retain some moisture) wrap them in burlap or newspaper and store in your basement in the coolest,darkest spot if there is one.

Jim thanks so much, I will do that, however, when would be the best time to do it? Its now about 40 here in New England and the nights are about 30. Believe it or not... some leaves look like they are dying out but there are some new ones popping up the top. thanks
