I obtained a banana tree root ball from a construction site about two years ago and it has flourished. From what I understand the shoot produces fruit at about 18 month and then dies. I have not trimmed back the other shoots so now there are about eight and approximately six inches in diameter. What should I do to prepare for a Central Texas winter.

Also can you eat the bananas? Is there any danger?
