what do you mean by second year plants? Do collards winter over? I would have assumed they were annuals.

Hey Marie, How are you doing. The actual plant doesn't winter through, but if you just cut some back and leave the roots in the ground, they will come back the following year, grow a very tall stalk and flower and go to seed. Mine have already been flowering for weeks and the seed pods are developing nicely. When the pods get dry I save some before they open and let others open naturally and self seed. Hi Tony,
I'll post a report on how the bees are doing when I recover from embarrasment from a mistake we made that resulted in quite a mess and extra work. But you can see how our first attempts at 'kitchen' honey processing went on the thread about 'processing wild honey.'
