North facing? 45 foot? I know you didn't ask this but..........you do realize that will be in full shade in winter? Not exactly ideal for growing hibiscus.

As for what to grow with hibiscus, not sure I get what you mean by mix in with........if the hibiscus do well and depending on the cultivar, they will get very large, that's not going to make for a nice mixed perennial bed.

North facing is a very difficult place to plant here, full sun in summer and full shade in winter. If you want plantings to fill in and give color during the seasons, annual bedding plants are usually the best choices for that exposure. As for which ones exaclty.........that's up to really, what you like. The winter ones will start showing up in October.

Hummm, you raised an issue I hadn't thought about. Because of the heighth of the wall the plants still get a lot of shade early and late in the summer; but that helps with the 110+ heat. But you are correct; probably all shade in the winter.

So you are recommending some annuals and changing them with the seasons?

Yeah, it's just that a northern exposure is such a difficult one here in AZ. Full sun and HOT in summer then full shade and COLD in winter. You could build a shade structure there and do shady plants, it'd be perfect for heat tolerant hostas. I am personally thankful to not have a hwole lot of northern exposures to plant.

I have a north facing wall with hibiscus, pygmy date palms, chi-chi and katy ruellia, and purple lantana. The combination looks very tropical, with all the greens and bright colors. It all suffers a bit in the winter, but the hibiscus and lantana recover beautifully, and the ruellia kind of looks like bamboo when it gets tall.

I want to plant colorful things in a large flowerbed that will tolerate as much water as my hibiscus. I planted some small cuttings of lavender Rose of Sharron, but want more, & more color than just the red hibiscus. I had African iris, but am moving them, as they don't tolerate thatuch water

Any suggestions??? It's a large corner flowerbed that extends well out into the yard. There was nothing there when I started. I want it overrun with plants * colors
