Nate,
Bamboo are difficult to identify without general characteristics (clumping, running, sulcus, branching, etc). It is also helpful to see new shoots. Even with all of the above information, it usually comes down to eliminating the ones that it is clearly not, and narrowing it down to a few closely related ones. And just when you think you know what you have, some expert comes along and tells you that the name has been changed. For example, I thought I had F. dracocephala and F. rufa. Now I hear that the rufa is really dracocephala and the dracocephala is unidentified. Go figure!

Getting back to the topic at hand, I am going to take a stab at these. The top bamboo is Ph. rubromarginata. The bottom bamboo is Pl. shibuyanus tsuboi. A little insider information is very, very helpful! wink wink
