I have had Yellow groove in a Zone 8 environment (Seattle) for over 30 years. It grew very slowly and spread only a small amount (10') in that period. It was well-shaded by tall firs, although it did get some direct light for a couple of hours. When I finally did some limbing-up of the trees to get more sun into my yard, the bamboo grew much taller (about 50%) and put out more shoots than it ever had during that first year of increased light.

I think YG is native to zone 8 or 9 so it should thrive in your climate. Less light would probably slow it down as Kudzu mentioned.
