6' x 16" is a awfully small area to try to grow bamboo in, let alone for shoot production. I can't imagine any satisfactory results coming from such a small arrangement. Pole production and shoot production take space even for the most modest operation.

Oh, that's a bit different. 36 square feet instead of 8. That is still quite small for any kind of a runner as it would congest quite quickly I imagine. And runners are where it's at for shoot and pole production. If I were you I'd find a clumper that best fit your needs for edibility and pole production. Although clumpers in this climate aren't gonna be any bigger than 1". I don't know if the Fargesias are edible but I'd recommenad Fargesia Robusta if they are. Maybe I'll consult one of my books tonight and have a better answer.
