Hi! Yes, most species do well by layering. However, many of the species that grow wild are protected. I did see them for sale in California, but I've never seen them for sale here in AZ. They're beautiful plants, with lots of uses, but I think that they were harvested too heavily before legislation moved in. Their wood was so prized, that many species are on the verge of extinction.

The common species in AZ, pointleaf manzanita, or Arctostaphylos pungens, is found from West TX to Northern CA, and is in no way threatened (in fact, only one species of Manzanita, A. catalinae, is considered vulnerable, the least level of concern in the 'threatened' category). But some species in CA have surely been harvested indiscriminately...

I've seen several species available at native plant nurseries here in NM, and there are many more to choose from in CA. I would be surprised if similar nurseries in AZ did not carry a few at least.

I've always understood that vegetative propagation, and even transplanting of these guys is problematic. It might be fun to try seeds... although I've heard germination is triggered by fire (some folks ignite a layer of pine needles atop the seedling flats) and growth rate of these plants is very slow.

Thanks for the answers. I had seen places along the road where they had been bush hogged by the Hwy dept to improve visibility.
Sorta hoped to be able to salvage some of these to root.
I did find one variety at a nursery about 35 miles from home and bought what I needed.
That is most likely the surest and quickest way though I would have liked to try rooting some cuttings.
