Before and After

19 years ago

Sunflowers: Unforunately, most morning glories didn't take and there's no roof, so it doesn't make much of a fort. It's still pretty impressive how much these babies grow.

Before

After

Hanging Basket w/ Petunias in Basket and Moring Glory climbing up pole. Sorry these pics are sideways ... can't figure out how to straighten them out. It hard to spot the petunias through all mg vines.

Before

After

I may add some before before and afters later when I find them.

Please add any of your "before and afters". It's so much fun to see the progression throughout the season.

    OK...I'll jump in!

    It's not a new bed, but the way I planted it this year is! Not used to cramming everything together...I really like looking it at it, but now I'm not so sure I like working in it. It's too hard to get in and out without stepping on something!
    April 4th...just putting in new rock border to better define it from the gravel road...
    {{gwi:426356}}
    June 6th...
    {{gwi:426358}}
    July 28th from opposite end....
    {{gwi:426360}}
    Same date from about the middle area...
    {{gwi:426362}}
    and then same date from the same end as picture #1 at a different angle....like my shadow LOL!

    Well keep on cramming them in Vera it looks just wonderful!!!

    My friend built a sunflower fort this year She did 3 layers in a oval shape and it's just now getting tall but it's so cute to see the kids in there playing :) I think the added morning glories would be a great idea too!!

    Only have a few befores

    My ducktaped together birdhbath. more than 20 years old.

    Got tired of waiting for the petunia seedlings to get any larger, so stuck them in their usual spots in the birdbath.
    The livingston daisly had been in their for about 2 weeks.
    {{gwi:342165}}

    Remind me next year not to waste my time waiting for those petunia seedlings to get any bigger. This is what I had from those tiny 2 inch tall petunias exactly 2 weeks later.

    mo girl: Pretty sunflowers. Once you get those MGs mastered you'll have your forts. Nice job.

    Vera, I think that bed is gorgeous! I want to see a picture of your hands; I know both thumbs have to be green.

    I'm still waiting for the Heavenly Blue to show up! There were 6 of them, but I think the others crowded them out...

    Does anyone have problems with the Morning Glory spreading uncontrollably all over your yard?
    I LOVE them, but my dad's garden is over-run with them from a neighbor, so I'm afraid of them. I am new, so several people have sent me seed, but I'm afraid to plant them.
    Thanks

    Oooo...those MG's are so pretty. Mine have escaped into the trees like little monkeys. I need binoculars to view them.

    Here is my before/after:

    {{gwi:426379}}

    {{gwi:426381}}

    These are cannas that we moved from a spot beside the driveway that I decided was too shady for them. They like their new home...

    {{gwi:342715}}

    We measured Friday. They are a bit over eight and a half feet tall. Woo hoo!

  • 19 years ago

    Wow everyone! Really awesome pictures :) There are some incredible gardeners on this site.

  • 19 years ago

    estravia,

    I did the same combo of Morning Glory, but it don't look half as beautiful as yours! I just used a small tipi but now they are crawling into the sunflowers. I did order Parks Netting from Park Seed but only used it at the back of another border but these MG are no near as vigerous and pretty puny so the netting is mostly empty LOL!
    PV...I always love looking at your balcony! It's sooooo exotic :D

    Vera

  • 19 years ago

    Carol, My MG's are only allowed in that strip between the brick & the sidewalk. All others are removed before they try & smother other things! Vera, I was going to use netting but I didn't think it would be strong enough, so I used plastic covered fencing. So far it's working well, but I wish my heavenly blue would show up!

    Ok, i'm in.

    Before-April(well technically before was all grass, so that's after I made the bed and planted new daylilies)
    {{gwi:426386}}

    After- Aug (the daylilies that bloomed this year are already done, sorry)
    {{gwi:426387}}

    Before May
    {{gwi:426388}}

    After July (still waiting for the mamoths to open and morning glories to grow more to take the 'final' pic)
    {{gwi:426389}}
    (view from inside the non growing cuke tunnel)
    {{gwi:426390}}

    The SF house is bigger now, just busted my dig cam so haven't gotten a recent shot.

  • 19 years ago

    I stole my husbands camera phone so i could take new pics of the Sunflower house. So I thought I'd share them with you guys, a little better before and after pics

    Before 5/2/07
    {{gwi:426392}}

    After 8/11/07 (try and ignore the strings, they're for the morning glory roof. I was standing and taking the pic from above them, the kids clear them w/ no problem. Only one mg has just started climbing the string, the sf w/ be done blooming by the time the mg make their roof!)
    {{gwi:426393}}

    {{gwi:426395}}

    {{gwi:426397}}

  • 19 years ago

    Wow, your sunflower fort is looking good :) I bet your kids are having a blast! It must have taken a long time to plant all those out, huh? What kind of sunflowers are those?

    It's a lot more filled in than mine ... and a lot bigger. I haven't tied my strings since most of the MGs died or were weed wacker victims. A couple have made it, but no flowers yet. It's still been fun though, having never grown sunflowers before. Since I took the last picture, the two sunflowers on either side of the "door" have drooped down toward each other , so it almost looks like an arched doorway. Maybe I'll give it another shot next year.

  • 19 years ago

    etravia, love the blue and purple MGs, just Gorgeous!!!

  • 19 years ago

    mo girl- The large sunflowers in the back are Mamoth Sunflowers, and in the front I just have misc. unknown short varieties. Mine just looks really filled in because there's ALOT of weeds growing in between! The kids actually don't even play in it. Only when I go out to water it. I was afraid that was gonna happen :( My mg aren't really growing much out there either, some are still in 1st true leaf stage! I think I did it too big, or if I do it again, ixna the tunnel, it seems too open, not secluded enough. That might be why the kids aren't playing in it, that or it's just been too hot!

  • 19 years ago

    Here's mine. I received an arbour for my birthday (december), and couldn't wait to get it up and "link" my new lasagna bed, and my expanded border.
    {{gwi:426399}}

    Here's a couple of months later:
    {{gwi:426401}}

  • 19 years ago

    Wendy, that is absolutely beautiful :)

    Also, PV, it is incredible what you've done with a balcony!

  • 19 years ago

    Been daying for 5 years that this huge oak tree has got to go. We keep filling at least 75 bags of leaves for pic up and the rest for compost. Enough is enough.

    So here's what happened on Friday.

    Top of the tree
    {{gwi:426403}}

    Middle of the tree
    {{gwi:426405}}

    Bottom of tree, part is gone
    {{gwi:426407}}

    And the after pic. The brown area of dirt next to the beautiful stump they left will be a new Iris bed, mixed with some annuals and perennials.
    {{gwi:426408}}

    Cam't wait till next month, when the temps really begin to cool down and I can get working on the new bed, have it ready for next spring.

    And this is the best I have on before and after pics of the Tomatoes. Everyone in the neighborhood is convinced I am feeding them steroids. Perfect place for the pots, not so perfect for the scrape and paint on the back of the house. too heavy to move now, so will wait till later in the fall.

    June 3 pics. Forgot one seedling and potted it up the next day.
