Begonia that rotted at the soil level

I purchased 3 beautiful orange begonias supposed to be out of canada. planted them in a large pot on my from porch, they did very well all summer until hot weather came, then they rotted at the soil level, anyone know what could have caused this. they were a hardy bloomer and grew to be quite large.
