It sounds like one of the (many) rhizomatous types, but from that description I can't place it. That's not saying much, actually, 'cause there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of rhizomatous begonias. If that's what it is, it needs good light but little or no direct sun, good light soil mix that drains well, lightly moist and allowed to dry out some between watering, especially in winter. A good place to look for pictures to try to identify it is the website of the American Begonia Society.

Oh, and an update, It is really doing alot better. Has a lot of new leaves growing. Seems to be very happy now ;)

i would guess a more common begonia is B. 'Erythrophylla,' but it could very well be 'Gobe,' depending on the leaf size.
