Found a chrysalis!

I grew parsley and had Tiger Swallowtail caterpillars that, except for one, left. One of them stayed on the parsley plant and formed its chrysalis. It is still out there, but we have had many freezing nights in a row (in the teens) and I wonder if this guy will make it through the winter.

Next to my deck, I had a piece of lattice propped to keep a new puppy from getting under the deck. I put the lattice in the garage about a month ago. Yesterday, I moved it for some reason, and I saw a chrysalis attached to it!!!! I am so excited. It's still in the garage. I guess I should leave it there until this freezing weather is over. When it warms up, should I try to detach it to take it outside or just take the whole lattice outside? I don't want to damage it. When would be a good time to return it to the outdoors?

Can they really survive all this freezing weather? I am in central NC. The past week or two have been unusually (record breaking) cold. Thanks.

Probably a black swallowtail, if on parsley. Regardless, many species do overwinter in the pupa stage, where yours are, through all kinds of freezing weather. If you can it is nice to have them in some sort of protected area, where they will not get too much rain/snow/wind, if at all possible.
Many will tell you how to carefully remove a pupa by using something like a pin to remove the silk pad (attached at the tail end) and cut the "sling" (toward the head end), if you wish to remove the chrysalis from where it is attached. The preference though is to move whatever they are attached to if at all possible. Also there is some possibility that they may emerge early if kept in a warm place, so if your garage is too warm beware.
Good luck with them, and enjoy their flight in the spring!

Hooray! I totally know the feeling...it's like winning a jackpot or something. Ahhhh...such a wonderful feeling and I totally can relate!

I went and rescued a bunch of Monarch eggs this past week. I am hoping that they are okay; no Oe and all that jazz. We shall see!

I found some Gulf Frit eggs, too! My poor Passiflora just has not done well this past year. DH has asked me, "Shall we get some new plants?" hmmm...not a difficult question to answer! I think our weather has had a lot to do with the problems we've had. Super hot then super cold. Totally odd climate. Must have something to do with the ol' ozone. At least I do have something of a Passiflora growing since the GFs are ovipositing and I have some larvae and eggs.

I do wish the Mourning Cloaks would lay eggs on my Salix (willow) although right now, the willows around here are sort of in the dormant stage so it isn't the right time. I wonder if they prefer the Elm since they seem more abundant. I doubt DH would appreciate my getting an Elm in the backyard, though.

Anyway, sorry to digress. Congrats, again, on the chrysalis!

I think I'll leave the one attached to the lattice. I have no idea when in the spring it might emerge...our last frost date per the almanac is April 15 I believe. Would it be after that? I will leave the lattice in the garage for awhile since it's really really cold now.

My poor little guy in the parsley plant is at the bottom of the plant on top of the dirt now since the plant has frozen, so it has some protection on the sides from wind. The plant gets sun almost all day though. I just want to keep the dog away from it.

Thanks for the responses. I hope I am lucky enough to catch them if and when they emerge. If anyone familar with NC butterflies knows when that might be, please let me know! This is my first experience with this.

Oh! And yes, the cats were definitely Black Swallowtails. My error.
