Starting Seeds

I started soaking them yesterday. Today will plant them.

Jacayna X savoy Truffle

Salmon Perfection X M.M.

Peanut X Savoy Truffle

Pink Smitty X M.E.M.

Painted Lady X Adeline

Ma Bella Amie X Mon Amour de Mariel

Mon Amour deMariel X Safari

Butterfly X Cypress Garden

Butterfly X Cremesickle

Plus a few NOID

Can I keep them in the GH???

Or should I keep them inside with extra Light???

I have a window in the GH so they will get morning sun light.

Or I can put on a shelf with indirect Light???

I have heat in the GH on cold nights, But if it's not freezing weather I don't use the heater.

Any input will be great! I have never grow Brugs from seeds.

I don't want to mess up.

Thanks,

Dorothy

    Hi Dorothy,
I would probably start them inside. They don't need bottom heat but do need constant warmth. You could move them to the greenhouse after they get a few sets of true leaves as long as it doesn't go below 60 in the GH. I wouldn't worry about a significant amount of light until they sprout. I have mine under fluorescent tubes on a plant cart. Since you haven't started brug seeds before do you know to peel off the corky covering before you plant them? I don't know if this is absolutely necessary but I don't know anyone that doesn't peel them first unless the seed is super fresh and still moist. Good luck with the seeds. Those varieties sound nice.

    thanks Chena for the site

I have them all planted, hoping for the best.
I know it will take forever before they spout!
I keep watching nothing yet! LOL

Dorothy I'd guess the majority will sprout within 3 weeks. Don't give up on ones that don't come up in that timeframe. I've had brugs sprout in soil that I've recycled the following season. Make sure that the soil is moist but not soggy. You don't want them to rot. Remember a watched pot...... lol

I have to agree with Karyn...LOL I have recycled soil and had stray sprouts just wishing I had a clue who they were...I bet they will sprout sooner than you think..

Now picture dragging them inside when they are 6 feet tall. LOL I have over 200 brugs & 4 Mandevillas (first year trying to keep them) stored in 2 short rows along a basement wall, Sangs & a few others under the lights, & the really big ones & Iochromas, an Epi & 2 Snail Vines (1 has ripening seeds) are on the plastic-enclosed front porch (where I can worry about them). Next year, more will be dormant in the basement. It was easier. I put lights up in my dining room & cover the table with a plastic tablecloth & put my seedlings & cuttings there. I can walk all around & they get plenty of light. I can cover the whole table & not waste space. I can stuff 12 of those big trays if I leave a little overhang. I also take over the kids air hockey table for another 9. Almost all of the brug seeds sprouted last year. Keep them moist till they lose the seed cover as they just come out of the ground. I heard that you should plant the seed root side up so it will drag the cover off as it comes up through the soil. Don't pick at them if it doesn't come off at first. Give it a chance & spray it to keep it moist. It is very difficult to get that cover off if it dries or really sticks. If all else fails, I use a tiny-edged dental pick. They grow incredibly fast & will race each other to the light. Even plants from the same cross can grow at really different rates so make sure the little guys don't get shaded out by the tall ones. Lots of fun & you will feel like a hen worrying over her chicks. LOL

    Linda,
Sound like you sure have alot of work getting them in and out.
I have a Mandevillas, 2 Iochromas and some Brugs and Brug cutting (and others) in the GH.
If I have to fit all the seedlngs and others back in there in the fall I may have to do alot of trimming.
Or get a larger Green House!
Thanks for the info. I need all the help I can get!
    Thanks,
    Dorothy

I only have so many because of all the seedlings. I started the seeds late (end of March) so they wouldn't get too big for the house & they didn't have quite enough time to bloom. Lots of buds that didn't get to open so I have to grow them out again to see what colors I get. I will be planting other seeds (slightly earlier) that I want to see bloom too + the other big plants & new cuttings. It's a major production twice a year but worth the effort. This year, I also have all those Adenium seeds & veggies & other kinds of flowers. I haven't planted even one seed yet but the Adeniums will be planted maybe Monday while the seeds are fresh. It will be a few weeks before I even think about any other kinds. My frost date is April 30 & it is usually the end of the month before I can plant them (very wet springs here). I get about 5 months of good growing weather. You are lucky to have a longer season for yours to finish. Here it is rush, rush, rush to plant them & grow them fast & then it's time to get them back inside before I get a really good chance to enjoy them. Label everything a couple times & put an extra label inside the pot all the way down into the dirt. If you do lose the top label, you can dig down & find an un-faded name (since it's out of the sun). I feel like I'm missing out when everyone else is starting their seeds already. Wait for me!!! LOL

WOW LInda you got it going on girl! lol I love the idea about the dining room table and will use it for all the seeds I want to start still. SOON I hope. Gosh like you said. Major production! but worth it I hope lol.

Dorothy so tell us, how many seeds did you start all together? ha ha ha They add up real fast. I could not believe that I have 50 some Plummies growing now roflmao. After all, I just planted a few of each kind I had hahahahahah

Good luck everyone with your seeds. What ever they will be

You all are so busy sowing seeds! I did some seeds a few days ago, but yesterday I ended up buying four plants while I wait for the seeds to grow, LOL!

    Hey Eloise,
You sound like me. Hard to wait on the seeds when you the plant! The garden centers around here are just starting to put things out. Not alot of plants yet. I can't wait until sring! In your zone you can grow things year round. Lucky you! LOL

    Lucy,
I have started 26 Brug seeds.
But have started some SW and a few others in the GH.
I want to do some more ws but its been a little warm here and I don't want to start them to early.

    Linda,
I need to double lable! I have so many that get faded out its not funny :(
Last year I painted some rocks with the names of my day lilies and some brugs put them by the plants. That was worked so far.
It sure get hot here in the summer. But we have a long growing season. So I want complain to much. LOL

Sorry the pic is so large.

My grands would have those rocks in a wagon and off they would be...LOL
    Good idea tho!!

Great idea using rocks with the plant name on them...I'm gonna do that!!...We have some left over river rock that will work just fine.

Thanks for showing that idea!!..None of my grandkids are here..boohoo :(

You guys who have your grandbabies so close, love them love them love them...I see mine on webcam, but that's better than not at all!!!

I have Grands around but they learn early to stay
out of Grandma's flower beds! LOL

Caren I do I do but that one who is here can wear you out in ONE day lol. I am not sure if I survive the 2 coming for 2 month in the summer. If I go MIA, DO worry about me!! lol They might have tide me up on a tree playing indian and forgot to undo the rope again lol.

Dorothy what a GREAT Idea with the rocks! That surely looks better then the all the labels I was going to stick everywhere and resembling a graveyard lol.

Each grandchild will have their OWN flowerbed. So far only Maddy has one. Which she can do with what she wants. It is so cute when she gardens. On Friday she went to one of the flowerbeds underneath a tree loosing a lot of big berries?...and started cleaning them out of there.

Here the stores have nothing yet. Lowes and HD only had sorry looking pansies last week.

But checking it a lot more often now lol. Spring fever ha ha ha

Kylie, I am with you there. Took my 2 y.o. GD with me to this nursery that has a lot of white rock on the ground. My GD immediately started collecting the rocks! The lady said it was o.k., and shared that a friend of her's brought her 2 y.o. son who ended up with his pockets so full of rocks, he could barely walk! All that to say, putting plant names on rocks would not work for me either because my GD would want to play with them! I've seen where some decorate/paint the rocks very pretty and have the plant's name.

My dogs would play fetch with the rocks, lol.

    Dorothy!

Thank you...You have given me so many ideas the past couple of days. The rocks are perfect for identification.

I called my farmer next door and asked if I could collect rocks when we were doing the little ponds. He said I could take as many rocks that I wanted. It helps him with planting his crops. I will have to wait until the snow melts and get out there before he plants.

Thank dorothy....I now have id tags for my brugs...LOL
