I have a follow up question. In your experience, how often is it required to re-stain cedar shingles to maintaing them? I've been told every 3 years, whereas, latex paint is said to last 10-15 years. Do you have any advice for which way to go?

Sorry for the slightly late reply. Definitely latex paint lasts longer. Stained shingles are much harder to maintain. In terms of how long the stain lasts, that depends on the product, the application and the site, i.e. how much sun, wind or shade exposure the shingles get. Three years may be true in your instance, but that seems like probably the lower end. Ideally it should last a little longer than that. Stained shingles have a much more natural look than painted shingles up close. This is the sole reason why people are willing to put up with the maintenance! (:
