Prayers needed

Please say a prayer for my son. I don't know what happened yet but he is in the hospital at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. I'm waiting on the hospital to call me.

All the hospital will tell me is he is being stabilized. He called me and said he couldn't breath and lost consciousness while I was trying to find out where he was. Thank god his room mate came in and called a medic to come revive him from next door and I had found the number to the hospital on base and called an ambulance. He had to be rescuscitated in the ambulance on the way to the ER. I just got to talk to him for a minute and he said he had torn a ligament in his leg again and they didnt believe him at the clinic this morning and made him do a bunch of stretches and he was in so much pain he couldn't sleep so he drank some beer and took several tylenol then a couple hours later took a couple of ibuprophen and then a couple of hours later he took the codeine he had left from his knee surgery and couldn't breath and thats when he called me and doesn't remember anything else. He sounds terrible and they are charging him with attempted suicide instead of accidental overdose. They damn well better do an MRI on his knee while he is in there or I'm gonna be on somebody's ass..I think he is going to be ok but he sounds really bad so please pray that he gets well and they find out whats wrong with his leg and don't charge him with suicide attempt. I don't think he would have called me for help if he was trying to kill himself and even his room mate said he was been very talkative and cheerful. Not at all depressed. I'll talk to you all tomorrow.

I'm so sorry about your son. Will keep him and your family in my prayers. Hope he gets to feeling better real soon.

Kristy you must be worried sick. What a horrifying thing your son had to go through to get help for the pain. That is unbelievable and the person that did not believe him should be held accountable for his action of denying (sp)to seek medical help. Which he should have send him to the hospital to get it checked out. That is a bunch of bull CHARGING him with suicide. I pray he will be ok and that God gives you the strength to handle this ok. Thank God he was able to call you!!!

So sorry Kristy. I hope he is okay, you must be worried sick. Take care of yourself too.
I can't believe they made him do all that with a torn ligament and obviously in so much pain! I pray he has a fast recovery.

Kristy, I am so sorry. I hope you have heard from your son again by now. There should be no question of whether or not to perform the MRI on his knee. If the base hospital refuses, arrange to have it done off base.

If they try to charge him with a suicide attempt, contact your congressmen. In fact, you might be able to get a few friends to contact their congressmen. I would have no problem asking mine to check into the situation. Poor decisions by military leaders are a concern to everyone.

    Keep us posted.

Kristy, my prayers are with you. Now for the medical advice. I see this often where I work, believe it or not accidental overdoses are quite common. I am not sure about how the military handles things but in the hospital where I work, we do put these patients on suicide watch. We don't take them out until they have had a full psychiatric evaluation. It is more a cover the medical professional arse than anything else. What you need to realize is yes people have committed suicide while patients in a hospital and most facilities are not going to run the risk of it happening at there facility. (I can name 3 instances off the top of my head here in town). The key for your son is getting that eval even if it means demanding a civilian doctor for an opinion. But the health care professionals can not declare that this was a suicide attempt unless your son said it was or the psych doctor says it was, a regular MD can not make that determination. Your sons story of pain is a common one and it does happen, not too long ago I had a woman that had pneumonia, she hurt so bad she kept taking her cough syrup (with codeine) she came in a a suspected suicide attempt. But she wasn't she just hurt and really didn't remember taking the cough syrup after the first doses. I hope this helps and though it does not excuse your son's pain being ignored I hope it gives you comfort to know that your son's reaction was normal. I will keep you in my prayers.

So sorry to hear of your son's problems. Hopefully one of his commanders will actually take the time to listen to him, and do a proper evaluation before rushing to judgment. I agree, if the military won't do the MRI, get it done off base.

    Prayers are on their way!

Thank you all so much. He is at home now but asleep so I don't know what happened after I talked to him last night. It was the MP that told me he was being charged with suicide attempt but surely they evaluated him before they let him go. I'll find out more when he wakes up. I have his room mates phone number and he will let me know when he wakes up. Please keep the prayers up. I will make sure he gets the help he needs whether its mental or physical.

Kristy, it sounds as thought they deemed it an accident. They shouldn't let him go home alone otherwise. Like I said that is not a judgment the MP can make. I am glad he is home sleeping it off.

Mary I am so glad you gave some sense to how things work at hospitals about attempted suicides or accidental.

Kristy glad he is home and has that worry of his shoulders. That is one thing you do not need being in the military. But what are they doing about his pain...the torn ligament?

    Hugs to you

Kristy, you must be worried sick! Good to hear that he is resting now. Did he reinjure his leg and did they have to do surgery again? I hope they gave him something to control the pain. Keep us updated. Your family is in our prayers.

Wow Kristy, I am so sorry that your son, and you are going through all of this. He is now out of the hospital and that is good news! Praying things will continue getting better for all concerned.

He said they decided it was accidental and believe he had an allergic reaction to the codeine causing his airway to swell shut. He woke up in the ambulance intubated and was struggling with them and one of them restrained him by the neck and left bruises around his throat. I am still worried that something is bothering him and he isn't telling me everything so will check into things more on Monday after getting some advice from the military here. They did not do anything for his leg but put the leg brace back on and told him to follow up with the orthopedic clinic on Monday. They would not give him anything for the pain which I can understand under the circumstances but can't believe they didn't even take an x ray or mri. I will do what I can from here but having dealt with military doctors before its not easy. They give you ibuprophen for everything unless your bleeding then you get stitches as well, lol. I told him to insist on another MRI or they will not do it. I hope he doesn't have to have another surgery. He broke his growth plate in the same knee when he was 16 and they told him it would be trouble if he ever injured it again. Thank you Mary for all the help and everyone else too for caring. This has been really hard on me listening to my son dying on the phone is something I don't think I will get over anytime soon. God must have other plans though. I found out he was in the bathroom when he called me and doesn't know how he did. He thinks he was trying to call 911 and I am 1 on his speed dial. Then when he passed out his phone must have hit the speaker phone button on and his room mate heard me screaming for Sean to wake up and hold on that I had an ambulance coming and he got to him and ran next door and got the medics to come and do CPR which saved his life. It was horrible listening to him gasping and gagging and then the silence after he dropped the phone and trying to look up a number at a base halfway across the country to get someone to send an ambulance to him. John was on the house phone with 911 who put him through to the base here then transfered him to base there and had to tell the story each time. Thank god I had the sense to look up the base directory for where he is stationed and got the ambulance on they way by the time John finally got put through to the MP station. I still can't quit hearing them say we haven't gotten a call to that building and me yelling this is the call get your ass moving he is unconsious! I'm gonna have nightmares for a while I think. Going to see someone myself this week and get some advice and maybe some counseling. I know he has other things going on with his child that are out of his control right now so that was why I worried that he overdosed even though he swears he didn't. Kind of hard to talk sense into them when they are grown and far away and I really don't know what to do. Thanks you all for being there for me. It means a lot.

That sounds just dreadful for a parent to go through. He's very lucky you were prepared with numbers and such to get through to the base and get him help. You did good keeping it together to get help for him. Just cuz boys grow up, doesn't mean they still need their mothers!

Even if the OD wasn't intentional, it definitely won't hurt for you to get some help to get you through the emotions you've felt the last few days.

Hope things calm down over the next few days for you!

    Prayers are still with you.

    Ryan

    Kristy,

What a helpless feeling that must have been! It was you he called (even if 'unintentional') and you managed to make all the right moves to get him immediate help. Thank God it was you he reached. And it sounds like you are really tuned into what YOU need as well.

(((a big warm hug and squeeze)))

    Holding you both in prayer.

I am so glad that charges aren't filed.

It may have been best that he reached you instead of 911. Though the call was stressful for you, your screams may have saved his life. I suspect that his roommate had medics there earlier than help would have arrived from a 911 call.

You will remain in my prayers.

Kristy, I can only imagine what a horrible experience you had when your son called you; that feeling of helplessness, fear and desperation in hearing your son gasping for air. All I can do is encourage you to please try not to dwell on that experience because evil wants us to be miserable and feel helpless. Instead thank God for sparing your son. This will also clear your mind so that you can continue doing what is right for yourself and for your son. You did a fantastic job, and you saved your son's life. I hope you feel the prayers and hugs I am sending you.

Thank you all. The hardest part was that I didn't have the phone numbers to call anyone for help. It was aweful trying to search the internet for the Camp Lejeune directory and then find a number to the hospital so they could put me through to the ambulance dispatch. I am trying not to think about it all the time but he is not doing well emotionally but only wants me to say what he wants to hear. Not the hard truths of life that he needs to learn to survive. I need help to know what to say to him to make him get the help he needs. This situation with his ex= girlfriend and the baby is driving him nuts and me as well. They need to do the DNA test on the baby and go from there but of course doing what I say would be too easy. Its better they think to use the baby to go back and forth and hurt each other when they don't even know for sure if its his. I want him to get the test done and if its his take care of it and work hard to get his life in order so he can be a good father and go on with his life and find a good woman that really loves him and that he loves back. Doing life backwards will never work. He says he can't live without her but she doesn't feel that way about him. Her parents pay for everything and take care of the baby while she does as she pleases and will keep on doing it to keep her from getting married. She is not willing to give that up so it tells me she doesn't love him or she would go marry him and get a job so they can make a good life together with their child if he is the father. He wants it to be his so bad that is all he thinks about. I told him he can forget about her. Find out if the boy is his and go on with his life and make good friends, get a hobby, stay busy and enjoy your life until the right girl comes along that is willing to make sacrifices to be married to a man in the military. Ah crap here I go again. Sorry to go on and on about it. I just need to ask the doctor if I am telling him the right things. I don't want to make things worse and he is depressed so now I am worried about him even more. Thank you all so much. John took me fishing to get away and relax a while today but fishing wasn't too good. Better than staying home worrying though. You friends are the kind that he needs to make that are here for you to lean a shoulder on when you need it and pray for you when you need and just to talk to when you sometimes need to talk. I love each and every one of you.

Kristy got to give you a big hug first. The sad part is, that your children think you do not mean well for them when you try to tell them a thing or 2 about life.

After having watched what my son had and still has to go through with his Ex WIFE, I can tell Sean that he is lucky he is not married and in a mess. You are SO right. There IS a better woman out for him and luckily after years of heartbreak to watch your child go through all the pain and heartbreak turned into him being very at peace and happy with a great woman.

He just has to go do all the things that he is scared of doing. Like you said, there is no way around it. I just pray that he finds his strenght and sees how many people DO love him.

    Kristy call me

    Hugs

Kristy I just saw this thread and hope that everything is alright.

If only others would learn from others' mistakes, but unfortunately, that is usually not the case. Kristy, I pray your son will get help with his depression and then he will be able to more clearly make decisions. All you can do is continue loving him and praying for a full recovery. You've already given him your opinion of what he should do, but if he is not receptive right now, it is best to not keep insisting or you will drive him away. Hopefully in the near future, he will have the test done to find out if this is his son. Although, he might not end up with the mother, his responsibility still should be that he supports and loves his child all he can so that the baby won't grow up without his father's love. Hugs and prayers going your way.

He finally talked to his 1st SGT and asked for help. They are evaluating him. Also found out his knee needs surgery and it will take a year and a half of rehab to recover from it according to the SGT I talked to and that is part of what is upsetting my son having to sit up there not being able to go with his unit and not do anything for over a year by himself. I knew more was going on than he was telling me. He will be losing all his best friends when they deploy without him and I guess he is feeling like he has nobody left. I am so relieved he is finally talking about what is wrong. I wish I could have gone plant shopping with you Patti. Had to work all day by myself. Was not fun with the other going on. Lucy I left you a message.

Kristy I am glad you did the calling. I just *found* your message. I hate this phone.

O Kristy, haven't been on for a couple of days and I'm so sorry you had to go through that and that he's okay. I had a custody fight over my son with his dad and horrendous girlfriend. It was terrible. I don't think I ate for 4 days. But please please trust me, everything works out for the best. Just try to enjoy each day and live for the kids. :)

    Dear Kristy-
I feel SO bad for you & your son- I have seen some pretty terrible things happen to my son- so I can sympathize with you- but if you hold on to God, He will see that everything turns out alright! I will be thinking & praying for you!

Great news Kristy. He took his first step in getting the help he needs. God bless him.

    What is "Oma's"??

Thank you all he sounds much better this morning. He is on his way to get an evaluation done so hopefully he will accept the help. I told him he needs to get back into church as well. Oma's is a plant nursery here, lol. I went by Patties after work with all the dogs and what a circus it turned into. I had my 3 and her one was there so I thought they could play while we visited for a little while. She got two rabbits yesterday and the first thing they all did was try to eat the rabbits so I told her I was going to have to leave. While we were gathering up the others Lucy Lou snuck into the greenhouse with the parrots and one bit her on the nose and chased her out, lol. Then she was hiding behind Goldie and a cat came up and sat down right beside Goldie the cat killer and off they went. The cat scratched Goldie and that didn't even slow her down. She chased the cat into the pond and turned over all the potted plants and treed the cat on the deck. Poor cat was all wet. Goldie forgot all about her heart condition and bad hip. I didn't know she was capable of running so fast. She couldn't even jump up into the truck afterwards, lol. Visit didn't last long, lol. So sorry Patty, lol. Took my mind off of things at least. BB is staying with her when we go to Hawaii so Wednesday I will take just BB and see how it goes. Might have to make other arrangements, lol. Gotta go to work. I'll try to check back in later.
