Thought of a cristate euphorbia based on the first photo but the second one close up makes me think it might be an Asclepiadaceae - what do the flowers look like?

Your plant looks like Huernia pillansii used to be known as Taveresia pillansii.

Actually, Huernia pillansii does sound correct. Do these usually become cristate?

A plant can all of a sudden decide to form crested or monstrose growth for no apparent reason and likewise a crested plant can revert back and produce normal growth.
I have never seen a crested Huernia pillansii before although I do have a crested Stapelia.
You could if you wanted remove the crested section in late spring and pot up and grow on as a crest.

I'd love to know how you take care of yours (water light etc.) I have found this one (of all my stapeliads) to be the hardest to figure out. Thanks..

When it is warm enough, it receives full sun in the greenhouse and gets watered 1-2 times a week depending on how hot it is. In the winter it receives florescent light positioned about 2 feet below and gets watered about once a month. Hope this helps.
