Looking for a Good Bromeliad Source in Southern California

Hi,

Just getting into bromeliads and wanted to know if there was a good source for them in southern california.

Rainforest Flora in Torrance has a huge selection of Tillandsia and also some bromeliads.

The best place is the Bromeliad Society Convention, but this year it will be in Sarasota, Florida. I went to one in San Diego, and it had the hugest selection of bromeliads I've seen in one place, other than Brazil or Costa Rica.

Most of Home Depot's bromeliads are not meant for full sun and are sold primarily as house plants. However, I have grown quite a few from there inside my pergola, which has a closed top.

If you're not looking for anything extraordinarily exotic, Home Depot almost always has a decent selection of blooming tank-type plants as well as Tillandsias. Can you give us a better idea of where you are in SoCal?

I am in Huntington Beach. I am looking for bromeliads that can handle full sun in my area. I have tried calling the different bromeliad societies, but it looks like I will have to go to their meetings and purchase from their sales...Wanted to know if there were any specialty nurseries...

The pickins' are slim down here, especially in the HB area. Michael's Bromeliads of Florida is the favorite of this forum crew for all your needs. Reasonably priced, cheap S/H, big honkin' plants, and A-1 quality. Or...next time you're down Oceanside way, gimme a call and I can set you up with quite a few full-sun species from my collection, no charge.
