Opuntia in bloom

Here's my opuntia blooming away! It put out 4 or 5 new pads this spring, along with around 14 buds. I'm hoping there will be more blooms at the same time. The flowers are about 2" in diameter, and a pretty yellow.

If anyone knows the exact species, I would love to know. It has a small mealy bug problem I have been dealing with. At least now I can say I have seen cocchineal in the wild.

The shape looks like the Santa Rita but there should be more purple on it. There is a crested variety also.
There is a variety of EngelmannÂs that has a purple coloration Â not as purple as the Santa Rita but green tinged with purple.
It is a beautiful flower.

your yard looks beutiful, it looks like a real desert. no woneder the pricklys are blooming.
P.S. you should start or get a cactus that grows really tall, i think it would look even more pretty. nice flowers
