I Really Need to Know When....

I need to know when it's safe to plant my brugs outside. I cleared the greenhouse of most plants today. I'm planning on planting the elephant ears and bananas tomorrow. Is it too early for us to plant the brugs here in East Texas? The weather had been beautiful and in the 80's and 90's during the daytime and the lowest at night is the upper 40's. What do ya'll think. I'm chomping at the bit to get these things either in the ground or in pots.

I also need to know which brugs get big and which ones stay kind of small. I have a bud on one of mine right now. Funny thing is it does not have a Y. I thought ya'll said they wouldn't bloom without the Y. It is an Ecuador White and it's not but about 18 inches tall. I'm real excited because this will be my very first brug blossom. I just wish it would have been a real pretty colored one or a double but I guess I should just be happy one of them is fixing to bloom for me. (grin)

Kylie, which ones do you have planted in full sun? I know some of them are ok in full sun and some are not here in Texas. If you can share that information with me I would appreciate it. I know there is one guy up town that has a whole row of yellow ones in full sun. I would like to be able to plant some like that too.

Someone here in Texas take the time to email me your thoughs. I have a few doubles that might still be alive. I'm not 100% sure right now. I'll have to take them all out of the greenhouse to see exactly what made it and what didn't.

Happy Gardening and Brugging everyone.

Marian

P.S. Miss Happy Toes, I still don't see anything coming up where I planted your seeds. (sticking out bottom lip and pouting).

Man, I just spent about 15 minutes typing about what all I did in my yard today and what plants are budding out and blooming and cleaning out my beds and the stupid computer shut down while I was finishing up. I lost the whole thing before I could send it. Then I was complaining about the stupid computer acting up so much lately and hubby tells me oh I forgot. I got you a new laptop the other day and its still in my truck. I guess I will spend the rest of the evening transfering stuff over and setting it up. That was nice of him. Glad he finally remembered he got it, lol. I am going to wait a couple of weeks more and make sure we don't have any late cold weather.

GRRRRRRRR! You all and your 80's. I want that! I woke up to wind chills in the 20's this morning : ( Marian as long as your temps are in the upper 40's at night I'd probably go ahead and plant them. Enjoy the warmth. OMG how can you all stand using a dial up. I'd get an anxiety attack waiting for a page to load. lol

Sorry Manian, that was part of the longs a@@ post I lost, lol. We didn't get into the money they allowed guides to join and so they walked away with the cash and there was a north wind so it was tough. We have only fished that lake a couple of times before. You and George come on down and fish anytime. I have an extra room if you don't mind me having dogs and smoking in the house. I am going to wait a couple of weeks to plant the brugs til I make sure we don't have a late freeze like last year. I have so many neat things popping up that I haven't gotten to see before. I need to take a pic of these cute little lavender bells I dug up out of a ladies yard last year. I don't know what they are. My grape hyacinth are blooming too. I cut grass and cleaned out all my beds and got everything ready to plant. I had to watch John close he felt guilty and tried ot help me but he kept yanking up things that I am hoping are dormant and he swore were dead, lol. I think he yanked one of my salvia and I saw my purple mexican sage on the ground with nice fat white roots so I potted it up for now. I needed to move it anyway. It was too big for that spot. My gardenias died back to the ground but I see new leaves comeing out from the bottom so I cut those back and need to move them back to the front. I think its too hot back there for them. I can't figure out how to keep the fonts big on this new computer and can't see crap. Didn't realize how blind I've gotten. I guess I need to go get my glasses redone since I have had them for 7 years and never wear them , lol. I would have loved to give you my old one but I am going to have it wiped after I get my pics off it and let my daughter use it when she is here so I don't have to share mine, lol. Hubby had a guy that used to work for Dell build this one for me for.

What is the last frost date for down there? I would at least wait until you have had a solid week of over 40s at night but again with the climate change it's a crap shoot?
If you do plant make sure you can cover it colder temps come your way?

We have had over 40 nights for about 2 weeks but usually have one last frost in early April every year. I am only taking out plants I can move back in or cover easily til then. The huge pots are going to have to wait til I know I won't have to move them again.

    Hello,
I am south of wash. d.c in 7A and I plant mine out april 15.

I have never lost any, and in fact, I have several brugs that I leave out and they come back every year. I don't mulch them or anything.

Billjoebob where are you located? I'm in MD, about 13 miles outside of DC. BTW we have the same b-day 4/23!

Hey and Welcome billjoebob.. with that name you sound like you are from Texas...LOL Look forward to seeing you around!

Marian I have moved most of the Standards out but I am not trusting of the weather.. It did snow on Easter last yr.. I am moving all of them to the porch today due to the storms blowing in.. BTW looks like they are there for you.. BE SAFE! they say they could get bad...
I guess in a couple of weeks we should be past any freak stuff..I have been burnt by buying into all this pretty weather and then have to jump thru my ars to move everything.. Just not up for it...LOL I can wait...

Well so far the storms have missed us today. Either that are they just haven't got here yet. I don't mind a few nice slow soaking showers but those storms are the pits.

I did take most of the stuff out of the greenhouse and it's just setting outside so it will get some rain. All the little brug babies are still inside tho.

I'm almost finished weeding all the iris and daylily beds. Thank God, I feel like my right arm is about 10 inches longer than my left. LOL My hand is in a curled position like I'm trying to grip something. LOL

Ahhhh, and to just think I will be adding a few more flowerbeds as soon as the weather permits. These beds will be made with the big tractor and I'll just sprinkle tons of zinna, sunflowers, and other seeds in it and forget it. They usually turn out the best, and I just mow right up next to the tall flowers and forget weeding them. They are in the background anyway so why bother with unnecessary weeding.

My seedlings are all doing great that I got from Edna. I'm probably going to plant my Vigna plants outside sometime next week.

I'm going to plant my daylily seedlings outside in the next couple of days. I just hope they are big enough to make it. They are about 7 to 8 inches tall and really need more dirt to grow in. The roots are coming out the bottom of the pots.

Thanks everyone for posting so I could read what you thought about me moving the brugs outside.

Welcome to the Brug Forum Billyjoebob! These people here are the greatest enablers around. LOL

Kristy, I don't blame you for keeping it for your daughter. LOL that way you will not have to fight to use it to talk to all us.

Karyn, I have time to cook, clean, and so forth in between doing things on this dial up slower than Christmas Computer. I'm not kidding, when I first start getting on, I'll start the tea, then about 7 minutes later and I'm still not connected, I can go turn it off. Then after it connects, I can click on the internet, and go wash dishes waiting for it to load all my email and junk. It's slow and it's awful but it's the best thing I have right now.

Before I got divorced from the JERK, we had digital in everyroom of the house. He was a computer GEEK and had computers in every room along with a T.V. and all the junk that kind of person enjoys. We had surround sound in 3 different rooms. So if we had company and they wanted to play those dumb war games, the hole house shook from the sound systems. It was CRAZY you felt like you were in the WAR ZONE.

Now I have a run down used laptop and this dial up modem. Hey don't laugh it's a little better than tin cans with a string attached. It does get out once in a great while.

    Happy Gardening Ya'll,
    Marian

Our puter has cable but it is a cr@ppy cable and it might as well be dial up. I mostly have to wait a long time for videos to load and to upload my photos to photobucket (which is why I don't post them that much!)

Once it is in the 40's at night, I leave mine out. It never actually froze here this year but I had mine protected or in the garage for awhile when it was in the mid 30's. Most of my tropicals including monstera, some gingers etc stayed on the patio this year, I was too lazy to move them.
