Surely something in the G. monvillei complex. I'm just a little confused by those dark spines with the pale bases.

Well, G. monvillei complex is a place for me to start looking. The pale bases are on the very yongest spines. Older spines become a drab gray.

Whatever it is Al, it's a beautiful plant! I love those spines, the way they sit flat back against the body of the plant.

Could it be a Sulco?

Larry, I do sometimes have a nagging doubt that it's not a "chin". I keep thinking that I saw a pic posted somewhere, possibly on this site, with a different name. I've been searching and searching.

The reason I mentioned Sulcorebutia is the fact that the areoles are elliptical,lens shaped, not like gymnos at all.

I posted a pic of my G. multiflorum a while back, and someone there said something about 'chin cactus'. I don't know if that's what the common name for mine is, but yours looks similar. Also, Desert-Tropicals.com says that G. monvillei is a synonym of G. multiflorum. The link below is the post with the picture of mine, and all the comments. Good luck!

Couyld be a Sulco but I can't think which one would have spines that strong and that dark. Maybe a different Rebutia.
