Higo Camellias do not need special planting instructions (from those of other camellias). The instructions for any camellia will work just fine with Higos. They need some shade protection in the afternoons. They prefer acidic soil but will tolerate being planted in alkaline soils. Should the alkaline content be too high, the leaves will show signs of iron chlorosis (the leaves will turn light green to yellowish, with the leaf veins remaining a dark green color). In those cases, add some liquid iron-chelated compounds to acidify the soil. You can also use garden sulphur, green sand, iron sulphate, etc. Mulch well and maintain the soil moist constantly (or as constant as you can without the soil becoming wet).

Camellias can live hundreds of years and can attain the size of large trees if the conditions are right. I suggest you contact Nuccio's Nursery in Altadena, California. I think they introduced Higo Happy. My catalog from Nuccios is missing due to some work being done in the house so I cannot tell you what they say about your plant.
