Lovely pictures. I have a question. I have a Shishi Gashira Camellia on the property we just purchased. It's been planted right up against the house and doesn't look too happy. Will it tolerate being moved? What kind of soil does it like? How should I fertilize?

Camellias thrive in humus-enriched, well-drained soil with acid pH. Maybe soil pH is too high near the foundation. Small Camellias can be easily moved(and planted with roots at surface and mulched), but larger camellias are more difficult.

The variety in the first four pics is April Dawn. Pictures 3 and 4 show its typical look. One of its parents is Herme, from which it has inherited a tendancy to produce sports. One such mutation which has been named and introduced is Stellar Sunrise. It looks much like the bloom in your pic number 2 but often has more incurved petals. I grow April Dawn here in NE Tennessee and it is one of my favorites. My bush also sometimes sports the solid dark pink blooms, but not nearly to the same extent as yours. Your bush seems to have sported a stable bud mutation which produces branches with only the solid pink blooms. It is very pretty.
