It could be cottony camellia scale. Scale is very common in Spring. You can use oil/insecticidal sprays and release beneficial insects.

That's what I'm afraid of!! Thanks Luis for the info. I only found one so far and cut the leaf off. Is it still a good time to spray w/ soap?

Check the label and see if it has any temp restrictions.

Umm. Why did you discard a perfectly good leaf when all you needed do is squish the scale?

I don't wonder about discarding one leaf so much as the idea that one bug on a discarded leaf means you need to spray the whole plant? If there was only one leaf affected and it's gone, why spray?
