pruning camelias

we've had beautiful camelias planted next to our house for 25 years. we've let them go unpruned for years, and they've

shot up higher than the roof. i want to prune them using the old rule of never pruning more than 1/3. my wife wants to prune so negligibly that it wouldn't reduce the plant size much at all. she calls me the plant butcher!

of course, i can't touch them until we have a meeting and agreement of the minds. we need some expert advice. how much can i safely prune, and during which months? thank you very much!
