We can't agree on flooring

We are renovating our kitchen. Shaker-style white cabinets with simple brushed nickel knobs and pulls, black appliances, pale yellowy gold walls, modestly sparkly black backsplash going only behind stove and stainless vent hood, New Venetian Gold countertops. My husband and I have been on track for the entire renovation - EVERY decision has been easy as pie!

And now we need to decide flooring and we are NOT in agreement. I want bamboo, he wants oak "like we had in New Jersey" (that was an 80 year old house with original floors). I mention cushioned vinyl, he mentions natural stone. We also can't agree on the general color of the flooring. I want dark, he doesn't know what he wants. The only thing we agree on is that we don't want laminate.

We need something durable (two kids and a dog), within our budget (no more than $3.50/sq ft), and that won't hurt our feet when we spend long days in there prepping for parties or extended family meals.

Any ideas or suggestions?
