When does this particular variety usually bloom there? The season is fall through spring, with different kinds blooming at different times.

Good question. We just moved here in August, so I'm still learning.
However, I have a sasanqua that has already bloomed (just two blossoms) but the rest of the buds are just sitting there.
This other camellia looks like a sasanqua (though darker leaves), and it's had buds for a couple of months.

I have two plants. Both have white flowers, one is a single and one a formal double. The double gets large buds that try to open but the bud breaks off near the bottom. Under the break it blooms (broken) but the top of the bud stays closed tight and dies of course because it has separated from the rest. Has anyone seen this before? I can't seem to find any info on it.

If the buds are tight, you will have a few more months before they bloom. When they start to show a little color and the weather is warming, it should just be a few weeks.
