You are growing the canna cultivar ÂCleopatraÂ. This plant illustrates the unique qualities commonly found associated with this unstable chimera. On this plant you will find individual leaf stalks that are totally green and that stalk will nearly always produce only the typical yellow blooms. The stalks that show the red sections will produce flowers of both red and yellow blooms. On rare occasions, an entire stalk will produce only the red foliage and the entire bloom will be red. So did this occur when the two other canna plants (one yellow and one red) somehow crossed. Sorry I don't know the correct terminology, but I have been told by this grower that he started many years ago with just two plants, the red and the yellow and that is what he grew for years until this canna with the stripes on some of the leaves appeared. He was throwing out all the rhisomes (sp?) from these plants until one of his customers told him he would take all the rhisomes from the "new" plant that he had. He wasn't selling these canna's, he gave them to me when I purchased the standard red and yellow (and this year Tropicanna) that he always sold. This plant is ready to bloom any time now, hopefully tomorrow. I will post a picture of it as soon as it opens. Here are the first blooms from what Kent has kindly identified from the leaves as ÂCleopatraÂ. I am so excited about this canna as I had no idea what it would look like. I think that this is a "keeper". Thanks Kent for your help.
