Why are my cannas tall with small flowers vs large?

I don't recall have tall cannas with smalll floweres? Why is this happening to me? They are in full sun and watered. I like a full looking affect to my cannas so I plant them about 2-4" apart in a circle about 3' in diameter. Could this be part of the problem?

It could be the type/variety of canna that you have. As an example, Omega is one of the tallest cannas but yet has a smallish flower. I also have some dwarf cannas that have huge flowers.
