Canna need an absolute minimum of 6 hours of direct sun per day. Deer do not feed upon canna. Japanese Beetle, and Canna leaf roller are major pests.

Canna are heavy feeders of organic material. Compost, compost, and more compost are necessary. Many people report success with synthetic fertilizer, personally, I won't use it.

last year was my first year planting canna's. I purchased 12 rhizomes from craigslist. I beleive they are Robert Kemp. Red and grew to about 6 ft tall. I watered them daily and they received about 8 hours of full sun daily. I never used compost, put them directly into the soil. I used Miracle Grow about every 2 weeks or so and at the end of the season when I dug them up, I ended up with 120 rhizomes. In my opinion one of the easiest things to grow if you water daily and they get enough sun!

Yes cannas are fairly easy to grow, they love sunlight and ample water. Leaf rollers seem to do the most damage to cannas. I use both compost and synthetic fertilizers.
