Distorted leaves

My roommate has an Ecuador Pink brug that I gave her a year ago. It was doing great this spring, growing like mad, then suddenly, it stopped. The leaves are cupping under and the new growth is coming in small and pale.

I feed it Miracle Gro once a week, 1 tbsp. per gallon (it's in the ground) and keep it well watered. I honestly don't know how deep the bed is where it's planted. I guess I should check to make sure it has enough root room.

Hate to say it Steppy but it sounds like it could be mites. Spider mites are easier to treat than broad mites. If you look very closely do you see any tiny spider webs on the plant, especially in the crown area?

It's not mites, and the top leaves have now started turning brown around the edges, but there are new shoots coming out at the leaf nodes. I'm digging it up tomorrow to see what is what. I have a feeling it's something in the soil, maybe grubs (I've found a ton of those in this yard) or nematodes.
