I have found that keeping the rhizomes in a clump ensures better survival over the winter. I think you might lose many of your rhizomes if you divided in the fall. I have stored the dug up clumps both wrapped in newspapers and just dumped into a garbage bag and have found that they keep better in the garbage bag. I do agree that it is a bit of a chore dividing in the spring especially when there is so many other gardening chores to do!

I have done as you've mentioned with positive results.

In the fall, I have rinsed off all the soil, dipped the entire clump in a 10:1 water/bleach solution, and divided. I let the rhizomes dry for a day or two, wrap in newspaper and store in a cardboard box on my basement floor. I've had very little plant loss using this method.

I grow most of mine in pots. I try to create the enviornment that they would grow if they were in a tropical climate. Since I have the space I bring the pots in the laundry room (gives me the tropical feel in the winter when doing laundry LOL) and water the pots once a month with 1/2 glass of water.. just enough so the bulbs do not dry out.

They are growing full force in March then they get a hole glass of water every week until I can put them outside.
