Hello all!

I walk past a house everyday with beautiful tall Canna plants, about 10 or more lining their fence. I belive that the people who live there do not want the Cannas because every year they chop them down. Of course the plants come back because they do not dig up the root system. I am moving soon and want these in my backyard, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.

As I walked past one day I found part of the root of one plant, with a new leaf growing from it. This was found by the dumpster when they attempted to remove one plant. The root had a thin brown lining on it and when I wiped that away the root was white. I wrapped it in a damp paper towel until I got home (5 hours) and them immediately planted it in a 5inch pot. I did this in early June.

The leaf has been turning brown and dry but I have seen no new growth. Did I do the proper steps to try and save this plant? Is there anything else I can do? Or is it just a waiting game to see if new foliage will grow?
