The cremaster should still be in place...the dark stem at the very top of the chrysalis. Take some sewing thread and tie a knot around the stem and tie it to the top of the cage. I've moved many a monarch chrysalis around this way with no problems.

Another way to do it is to take a small piece of masking tape and fold it over the cremaster vertically, so you have a masking tape extension. Then take another piece of masking tape and attach the extension to the top of the cage, or tape it around a horizontal stick near the top of the cage. I used to do the thread thing, but I find it much easier with tape.

Below is an example. This chrysalis was not a fallen one, just one I wanted to move. I scraped the silk pad off where it attached and taped around that, but I've done it with only the cremaster to work with. (Yippee...this one will eclose in the morning! )
