Hi...I live on Oahu, and have several varieties of cannas and will trade with you for any that you may have that I don't have and vice-versa, if you're interested!! I divide my cannas while they are still in the ground, and this has worked well for me. For example, my Yellow King Humberts were crowding each other so much by our pool, that I took a hammer and drove an axe blade straight into the ground, and directly into a rhizome. Then, once I felt like I had hacked through the rhizome, I yanked hard on the plant that I wanted to remove (with its rhizome attached), and when I removed it from the mother plant, I re-planted that plant in another location. I have never had one die on me yet...and after I did the "surgery", the mother plant had more room, and became even healthier and grew bigger. The fledgling plant had room to thrive, too.
