I always split my cannas after I take them out for the winter. I take the rhizome and feel them... it sounds odd.. but i examine them and feel where they naturaly want to snap off from one another. For example with a large rhizome I pull on the smaller nodes and cut with a sharp sterile blade where they want to snap off. Then I wash them in water.. let them dry off and store them away for winter in a paper bag in my basement (50F) I don't add anything to the bag..some do however. I make sure I check them through out the winter to ensure they aren't rotting. Hope this helps!

I am new at this. I have a Canna "garden" that is approximately 40 feet by 8 feet. It started with 5 minature canns. It is now 6-8 foot canna mixed red, yellow, and orange. It has TAKEN OVER the front of my house.

I will be digging them up and I need help to "clean, store, and give away" most of them.

What do I do?

Do is wash them of leave them in dirt?

Do I store them in plastic, paper, peat moss, or wood chips?

How can I "divide" them (I have no idea how to do this)?

Do I use a knife or just brute force?
