You should be able to just use a fungicide during the growing season to keep it in check. I have never dealt with rust on anything I have ever grown and didn't realize it was much of an issue this far north. Rust is just a fungus that the wind carries to plants, but most rusts are warmer climate fungi that can't overwinter much north of zone 7. As a result it is largely up to the wind whether you get it again next year or not.

Like I said though, I have never dealt with it where I live so perhaps someone more knowledgable with this fungus issue can weigh in.

There are numerous products you can use to control fungal problems on plants both synthetic and natural. Just type 'organic fungicide' into google and you will see many products. Some folks just use baking soda diluted in water. It all depends on whether the particular fungus is susceptible to what you are using as well as cultural issues. Sometimes the plants are unhealthy for any of many reasons and so are more susceptible to disease. Sometimes particular plants are just very susceptible genetically

I have been removing any leaves tha had rust spots before they do more damage. Whenever I see rust spots beginning, I rub Isopepyl 91 alcohol on them with a cotton swab for two days. I don't think that kills the fungus, but it definitely stunts it and prevents further spread of the rust spots.
