cutting up clumps now

Hi

It'll soon be time to dig up and store my cannas for the winter. I've had to move one clump recently and they are HUGE! I was barely able to lift it and it wasn't even the biggest plant I have.

It'll be one heckuva chore to haul them into the basement, so I'm trying to lighten the load.

I know it's recommended to divide the rhizomes in the Spring, but could I do that now, even fairly large sections?

Or could I dig up the clump and leave it to dry for a few days so that most of the dirt crumbles off? Not sure if that'll make a big difference in the weight of the clump, though.

Timing might be an issue, since I'll be cutting them after we get some serious frost and I don't want to have them sitting around if things turn cold suddenly. The plants are still going strong at this time.
