How do I over winter the tubers?

Ok I am new to cannas. How do I correctly over winter them so that they will be good to go in the spring. I am in zone 5 and I already have my dahlias put away. But what do I need to do for the cannas. They will be going into the basement. And also when is the right time to plant them in the spring. Thanks
