I was wondering if anybody has tried the new water cooler bottles for WS. We get our water cooler water now in big bottles that go to the bottle depot (30cts?) instead of the sturdy ones that you return/refill in store. I am thinking I could plant a lot of seeds in the bigger bottles.

Would I need to line clear bottles with dark plastic bags or something to keep the soil in the dark? I am just wondering since I heard roots don't like light and most pots and plug trays are black.

as long as you can handle the preparation of the bottles (making holes, cutting the upper part off or partly off) and you can have at least three to four inches of soil, they will be fine....no darkness for any part needed. :)
I mainly use 2 litre pop bottles and they are fine.

Absolutely. I love those large bottles myself and have used them for Winter Sowing. There is no need to keep the soil in the dark.

As a building biologist, I totally agree that water purification is a must! Water treatment facilities are intended for disinfection, not purification so harmful chemicals are added to sanitize the water. CONFUSED: As faithful Houzzers know, I'm remodeling here. I have kitchen and one bath done with the second underway. I have real calcium deposits, especially on the tub upstairs. I am concerned for my new plumbing in the bathrooms and the kitchen; I'd like to keep it nice and working and the glass doors to the showers clear. I am told there are two types of water softeners, those that use salt and those that don't. The salt one removes the minerals, and the no-salt changes the makeup/arrangement of ions/molecules (?) so that the you don't get the hard build-up of calcium, etc. I have not read in any of these postings about this second alternative. I was considering going that way...supposedly you don't get the slick skin feeling and get rid of the hard deposit problem too. Can anyone help clarify this? Any help appreciated before I call both salesmen and get more confusing sales talk. My husband says not to worry about it, that it's taken 35 years to get these deposits and w/ new plumbing, it'll take 35 more and someone will remodel again anyway. Happy Fourth everyone; take care.

Have used these bottles and they work well...noted to put 3-4 inches soil ( think that is where i go wrong)
