Drat!!!!!!!!!!!

Okey, how bout we critique our brugs this Fall, so we can save ourselves and others alot of trouble with brugs that look good on ebay or posted in photos but............they just don't deliver the goods.

Like, are you willing to wait on a brug that may not bloom for three-four years, or put up with a brug that keeps dropping it's buds at the slightest change in temperature ........or whatever???!!!!

I am making a photo diary of my brugs in bloom or about to bloom. This morning was the third or fourth day I have been taking the photos, as the brugs have started to open.

So, on morning 4 of photo taking, I went out and found Adeline had dropped all her buds!!! Grr-r--- and I have no idea why- one of my healthiest plants!!! Oh, well. I don't like the plant so much I will put up indifinitely with such tempermentality.

How 'bout you?

    That's a good idea Brenda!
My Adeline dropped all her buds a few times before she decided to finally open them for me on her third flush. She has amazing fluffy blooms so I will keep her anyway.

Dream angel is dropping buds too and I haven't seen one open yet!

Naughty nick really is naughty and has dropped 30 some buds, I was scooping handfuls of them off the ground! he better start holding them once it cools off or I'm kicking his naughty @zz to the curb!

Sorry to hear this. I haven't experienced bud drop yet and hope I never do. Most of my brugs haven't bloomed yet, they are all new this year except two of them. I have Adeline but it hasn't Yed yet. DO the buds only drop when they are small or can they also drop when they are large and about ready to open? BTW lets see your pics please !!!! :)

I have tiny once drop but also real big once that are ready to push the blossom out. Like on the LM just a little while ago when I checked on them. I for one think it is not their fault that it has been so hot without rain for so long. So I for one will not blame any brug for not doing well. It might do well for you but not for me. Because we leave in different zones. Take care of them differently. keeping a diary is a great idea and surely sharing it will give others ideas what they like or dislike. Just like I found out that american pride really loves sun and I have been trying to give it a lot of shade.
As long as the weather is so bad I just can not blame a brug for dropping buds. I would like to run around with the least amount of clothes in this heat myself lol.

My peach versicolor just dropped about 6 out of 9 buds and I'm assuming it's the heat. We just broke a record for days over 90 (19 today) but it's been really high 90's, and today was 101, with more 100+ temps for the next week. So I don't have much hope for anything until the jet stream drops below Colorado so we can cool off. I don't know where else I could put my plants - they're in a south facing courtyard and my other locations are either too shady or too windy. But, I'm gonna keep at em. I only have 3 brugs anyway.

Brenda, You have read my mind ! Come fall, I am kicking to the curb a whole bunch of the ones I bought over the fall and spring. If they don't perform this summer, they will never perform because all my summers are the same..LOL Also, some of the ones I bought, what a joke !! Where in the heck do they get those pictures ?? (photobucket magic) When those deep dark pinks are so pale they look white, I just want to kick some behind ! I do have some that are just great. American Pride, MEM, Santa Rosa, Shooting Star, Miss caylie, Golden Lady, and Painted Lady love it here. They also love full sun.
All my variegated (Jamie, Axel rose, Sunsport, Peaches and Cream, Maya, and Candida variegated) seem happy. Snow Bank is cranky, and Miner's Claim is soon to be kicked to the curb.
Wretched Mess, the plant it's self is very nice. It has made a ton of big old buds... all fall to the ground. Phanomenal is huge, and one of the biggest plants I have, but same problem.. bud drop.

In about 2 weeks, I will know alot more about who drops their buds. Just about every plant I have has buds, time will tell..

One last thing, I swear that I will NEVER buy another sigle pink !! I don't care what it looks like, I am sick of single pinks !!!

Taking notes for the once that love the heat. For me time will tell as I get more and my experience grows season to season. Kicking them out would be a great time to trade with zones with better growing conditions for them or? Should one warn newbies about these problems when trading?

Edna I'm here for ya to put you out of your misery and take those non performers to my house, lol. Any specific examples of the deep pinks that don't work for you.. I love the dark pinks and might steer clear of the ones that don't color up for you. Try Mountain Magic.. it has colored up real nice and dark for me.

I am thinking the same thing. As much as I love them I have to find some that can take the heat here since its an aweful lot of work to only get bloom in the winter, lol. I will have to give mine another year to evaluate them though since most aren't big enough to Y but some I got already with a Y and no buds that have hung on long enough to grow at all and I just can't water more than once a day a lot of days. Twice is the most they ever get. Fall is going to be lovely though and I'll fall in love all over again I'm sure, lol.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Edna, and i know different brugs perform differently in different part of the country and in different seasons!

    Kristy

I feel for us and You got it worse than Edna and I. Those in Texas- well, this can be a very frustrating time of year. I can send you Adora and one of my heavily blooming seedlings that is in it's third flush so far and smells heavenly- heat does not bother them. Wait for Fall to send.

Thanx for letting me vent. Second time of buds dropping off Adeline and I'm sure she will behave starting in September with cooler weather...........but............ just to get one flush on a plant that's growing since last Fall- no way!!!

I do have a bunch of brugs blooming right now. I will post later in the Gallery when I get a chance, okey Shawn???!! Creamsickle, Pink Perfektion blooms are not perfect yet but they are blooming, along with cute, extremely fragrant, little Gemini!

    Great Thread!!!
I have a few I am less than impressed with..LOL
NN and American Pride top the list..I'll try to start tracking them..
We have killer heat coming thru next week..I'll be able to see who's got what it takes..
Santa Rosa and Cherub are winners here in Texas.. 2 of my Fav's.. I only saved one SR but still have several Cherubs..

Yeh, Kylie, the Santa Rosa ya shared with me last Fall is covered in buds- just a few more days, I'm gonna flood ya'll with photos!!! LOL! And ya mean ya got even higher killer temps coming??? Aren't ya'll already in the 100's?

Shawn, I looked back at my photos on the 29th of Adeline, and the 3-4 buds on her were over 4" long. I opened one I found on the ground this morning and there was a perfectly formed little double bud inside- perfect!!! That sux!!!

Well, this is why brugs are trialed. Sure would be nice to have a rating system for the different parts of the country. Lots less heartache and misspent $$$$$$! I know there is such a system for the South when it comes to growing the best hostas for the heat and humidity.

I will post a list in October or November regarding MY winners and losers.

Welcome to Texas...LOL They are calling for 103~105 in the metroplex.. That is about 50 W.. So we will be about 2 or 3* hotter..Turn on the misters...A good Gulf breeze from the South... I'll be in the pool...LOL

    Kylie

You just send NN and American Pride to me & I'll take good care of them for you. LOL I can't find my Santa Rosa and Cherub plants & I think I'm missing a few others. I had a list that I crossed off as I planted them...till I got tired of marking it & just made a map of where I put them. I'm going to have to count. I'm not looking forward to that since they are all mixed up because I planted the biggest ones first & just went down the line.

Well, please add Mon Amour de Mureiul to my "Drat" list. Just dropped it's buds again!!! 'Nother journal entry in the negative column! LOL!!!

Hey, those tried and trues are looking better and better- bring on Charles Grimaldi and Isabella or Frosty Pink!!

My CG and Isabella come back from the ground every year- they are not blooming yet, but once they Y, they start bloomng and keep blooming!

Brenda I am with you on the Mon Amour de Maurelii .. It has been unhappy for a month now.. I finally dug it up and brought it in the house.. It has perked right up...LOL I guess it can't take the heat...I'll probably replace it with a V. Wildform
    Kylie

Dang, Edna, you are right about the Pink Perfektion- my blossoms all look like aliens emerging from the first skirt! I'm hoping future blossoms will straighten out once it gets cooler.

    {{gwi:521087}}
    {{gwi:521088}}

Don't they look a bit creepy???

13 buds and they are not dropping off, so I will keep her!

Lennette, I think Adeline is so pretty too and she is setting some more buds, but we are just getting hotter here in GA. We will see- It is such a lush, healthy plant!

Kylie- my Mon Amour de Mureiul has yet to set buds and hold them, except for one deformed blossm in May. It does keep y'ing, tho, so I may be in for a great first flush come mid-September.
Hey, do you recognize this brug in th following photos? Sorry for the snail munches!

Here is my darkest pink seedling to compare to Santa Rosa!

Sanat Rosa is a Keeper....Looks like she is lovin living at your house...Those are great pics... I bet PP straightens out when it cools down some.. Miss B Havin has some mal-formed blooms early in the season.. But come Fall. She can put on a show.. I bet PP is the same way...Nice to see you hav so many blooms!!! Still to damn Hot here.. I did find a as in 1 bud (so far) on Wrechted Mess..LOL not sure if it will hold.. SO SAD!!!LOL

I have little that is mentionable but I will give my best critique come fall, after a full season of growth.

I think I have a few simple cultivars that some may not have grown. Tropical Sunset, Wild Thing, Jean Pasko, Xena, Meadow Princess, Desire and NOIDS 1-30. ;)

    Barry

Do you really have 30 noids or are you counting your seedlings as noids??
And, I love Pink Favorite, also and I shared it with lots of folks last Fall but I don't think I sent it to you. Mine is about to bloom! Isn't it nice to have such cheerful blossoms greeting you everyday?

    Hey, Happy Birthday!!!

    ***

Kylie, now it's so hot, many of my brugs are a pale shadow of how they will look in a month or two! Most are washed out! Hope you get some rain! Hope we get some rain! LOL!

We either got a little rain overnight or hubby got up and watered early to make me feel better, lol. I have to look and see if I still have an adora. I know I had one but it was in the batch that bit the dust over the winter so I will have to see. I really need to get off my butt and make a list so I don't have to check tags to look and see what I still have, lol. I think I lost Adora and its Cotton Candy that lived but I have to check.

    Kristy

You can always have another Adora from me but I have no rooted cuttings of her right now!

She should bloom for you in Texas and I don't mean in October but in May, and June, maybe July!! She stops at around 100*.

    So, was it rain??

WOO HOO we are getting rain.. 2 3/4 " so far.. I would like to keep this thread up to the top.. It might help decide which Brugs will work best in your enviorment.. Also where is theWhis List Thread???

guess I will be taking allot of peoples drat listees, in the hot weather areas, since it has been relatively mild up here in the northeast :)

With my memory so screwed up I can't remember what I saw buds on but it was quite a few. I know some were Naughty Nick he has a big fat one. Day dreams has some too but she looks sick otherwise. One of the other ones was day glow or glowing embers or something to that effect and I can't remember the others. I really need to make a list. I think I saw adora and I think cotton candy has a some small buds. Thats all I can remember now. Desiree finally started growing but my cutting of Meadow Princess never made it so Barry save me a piece of that to root please and I'll trade you something for it. Shredded white has the hugest darkest fuzziest leaves and a few Y's so I hope it will make some buds soon. Miss B Havin is still growing straight up so she may be the tallest before Y ing. My poor NOL hasn't grown an inch but its rooted well and alive I don't know why its not growing and I think the next slowest grower is Pink Perfektion. Some of Johns have started taking off and have a few buds but he lost most of his name tags so alot of mine will be noids too, lol. I can't remember where I planted my Hawaiian double white. I think its the one in the barrel and its getting really tall and has Y'ed so I dug out as many of the elepant ears as I could and am pouring the fertilizer to it so it can catch up. I have buds on the one that smells like lemon pie too. Thats my unofficial name of her. Grrr I need to make a list.

Sure Kristy Will do. I have two MP. plants growing nicely but no flowers, some signs of y'ing. Still waiting on Desiree but it lost 2/3 of the foliage in the hail storm, It was going to flower but has been set way back. Don't know which plant is double peach, but i am sure i will recognize it if it flowers. Thats it for my doubles :(

Thanks Barry. I have a double peach too but it looks about like Day dreams. Those are the only two that look that way. I just had to go out and look and the other one is Ember glow, lol. I knew it was something like that.

Kristy, so Naughty Nick has a big fat one- well, his is naughty!!!

Oh, I'm in a mood today!!! Please ignore me! Just delirous cause we shipped off the last kid to college- the peace is making me wacky!!
