possible sb?!

I just read karyn's post, and realized that the markings were pretty familiar!

these are the cuttings that barry got from linda441. these three are the only surviving ones as the rest of them were too small and died straightaway. barry gave them to me. I'm somewhat alarmed by the markings on the stems:

{{gwi:533014}}

but even more alarmed by this stem:

{{gwi:533015}}

am I paranoid, or should I be worried?

Ria I am just guessing and the pros will answer for sure. But the last picture just looks like it is rotting. Can not really make anything out on the other pictures. Might be my eyesight thou.
Hang in there ....I know the answers will come fast

I think it looks like rot too. Doesn't look like there is any black border around the brown part.

Doesn't look like SB to me either. Have they been wet? It looks rotted. The others look like scars from being banged up. Keep an eye on them & watch for the dreaded black ring.

rialira, I have to agree not SB and you can take the new shoots and root those directly in dirt if you are concerned about the lower stalks. There is the appearance that these are being kept to wet, which can cause them to rot away.

I agree with everyone else. Not SB but some sort of rot. You probably allowed it to get too wet or maybe injured an area of the stem. It might very well be self limiting and the plant will do fine. I'd just wait and see what happens. If it spreads you can cut it above the damaged area and root it. Good luck.

I just got these from barry that way. I've been keeping them really dry, actually. must have been a shipping mishap, cause I trust his care more than anyone's.

I was thinking it just looked a little rotty at first, but after seeing karyn's post I wanted to make super sure. what a relief! thanks for putting my mind to rest guys.. now I only have to deal with a mosaic infected emily mackenzie and broad mites on 90% of my brugs. LOL.

If it is SB there would be some black around the area. My guess is as others have said, either rot or bruising/injury.
I am not here trying to defend myself, but I sent out in excess of 140 cuttings and given away to local gardeners about 60 more and so far no one has has any problems
To be on the safe side quarantine it and if you see any back spots do as Karyn did.
If this is SB I want everyone that received cuttings from me to please get rid of them and I do apologize.

What do you mean about a "Shipping Mishap"? Barry had emailed me when he received these and said they came in perfect condition but was disappointed that other people had received more than the 5 I sent him. I had ended the offer when he requested these and I took some that I was going to keep and sent to him. He also had hail storms which may have caused the damage, but some people are real quick to point a malicious finger
From now on I will not send any more plants out--I have enough things to contend with in my life now and I do not need to be accused of sending diseased plants.
I will no longer post on this forum

Linda YOU ARE NOT dropping out of this forum. See I'm yelling at you too. lol You are way too valuable and we all know that you've always sent healthy plants. You are more then generous. BTW my infected plant wasn't from you. It was actually a cutting that was taken from one of my oldest plants, a JY that I've had for well over 5 years. We've been trading for a couple years at least and you've always sent quality plants.

linda, I'm not having any part in internet drama. I didn't accuse you of anything. stop taking everything so personally.

Ria, I shouldn't step in here, but I am. When I read your post about SB and you said the plants came from Linda, it did sound like you were saying Linda was sending out plants with the disease. I would also be very upset if you were talking about me. Linda is a kind and wonderful person. She gives way more than she should, and way more than I ever will. She is not looking for internet drama, she is offended, and rightly so. You owe her an apology. My 2 cents worth. ~Edna~

The cuttings I recieved from Linda are fine, I am not an expert by any means, but your pictures really do look like they are rotting from the soil up. Each cutting is an individual, and not every cutting does the same as another.. It does look like the growing conditions are the cause, not the source of the cuttings.

Ria read the post from Karyn. Make yourself smart on SB. I have not but from what I read from Karyn....no one knows WHEN it comes. WHY it comes. Hers came from her own brug! Which is healthy otherwise.
I am new to brugs but I have learned so far that if you do get new brugs, you seclude them far away from all your other brugs until you are sure it is ok. Which can take month! I have one that I have tried everything with and it is in the far back of my yard until I know it just has not gotten over the shipping shock.
Linda it is NOT your fault! From what I read, the plants were originally from you..then went to Barry...then to Ria. NOBODY is to blame if it WERE SB! It is a virus that comes whenever it comes. I could come if it was still with Linda, or if you Ria shared a cutting with someone. From you.
But since it looks like rot to everyone. Did you maybe plant them to deep in the soil after you got them? If you keep them try, then maybe that could be a possibility or?
Linda I hope you do not let this stop you from being YOU! Everybody loves you and your generosity and big heart.
I let my dissapointment at one time spill out a name at one time. It was very wrong. The forum is a place we all come to to share. Learn. relax. forget the things that sometimes get to us in real life. What I learned since then, there is such a thing as being able to write private messages.
I always give people the benefit of a doubt and say there was no finger pointing. When I read the first post. But your second post Ria was not very nice. Since you DID name names with your brug problems, you could at least see who those named by you in your first post, feel.
Edna I put a LOT of cents in here. lol.....I figure this is my best piggy bank and either it grows or I get bankrupt.Gosh I hope I made more sense. It has been a long day lol
This is a big place on the WWW and everybody says we are family. So lets be one. A GOOD ONE! Please :-)

there's a huge deal over nothing here, lol. I saw karyn's post, got worried, and snapped pictures and typed out a fast post without bothering to double check it. I named names not to assign blame, but to retrace the path and see if anyone else was having the same problems. it never even occurred to me that it would be a "blame" thing, lol. I already made it clear I wasn't tossing accusations around and it's 99% sure to not even be a disease anyway. I can't believe this has blown up like this, jeeeez.

    Ria

Linda, I hope you don't leave the forum. Sometimes things need to be handled in private emails before names are tossed out and feelings get hurt. I hope it all gets sorted out and it looks like rot to me as well.

I dont post often and have popped in and said hello but when I read this post I had to respond. I do alot of cuttings of the few angels I have andit really does look like rot.

On Linda I have to say I have recieved alot of cuttings from her recently and absolutely love them all and they are very healthy even after tropical storm damage to the mother plants. I have known her as a friend for a few years and she would never send anything out that was even possibly diseased. She takes great pride in all her Plants & Gardens and I would trust her completely with any plant..

OK folks..I havent been feeling too well, and havent been on and then on come on to this..WTH?? Maybe I shouldnt get involved, but o well, I have to be me, so I will.

Ria, it sure did wound like you were accusing Linda at first. Then, it came off sounding like you were accusing Barry.."I just got these from barry that way". Sure does sound like you are passing the blame. If you got it like this, did you email Barry and ask him about it? I don't understand why you would try to blame Linda and Barry? I KNOW neither of them would EVER send out anything that may even remotely look like it has the slightest problem.
Def isnt SB, it is rot. There was a post on this not too long ago.

Whether you meant to or not, it DID sound as though you were blaming them, and as we all have to be reminded sometimes, this is all just typed up words..no tone, no emotion, no facial expressions..we take it as we see it, and unfortuantely our mood at the time of reading it comes into play here.
ANyway, If we're in a good mood we take it lighthearted, if we're feeling moody or in a funk, we take it badly. That's just how it is. (Linda has been going thru hell lately, and then you say this?) If I were you I'd be careful..noone is ever gonna want to trade with you or send you cuttings if you act like that. You really should think about what you type, re-read it again, and then again. Take responsibility.

You have yet to apologize publicly on here, and I really think you should. To BOTH Linda and Barry. Also email them both to apologize.

Linda, Linda, Linda..PLEASE DO NOT leave!!!! Stay!! You are so well loved on here, and send along nothing but the best cuttings! They grow great for all of us. NEVER a problem! We need you here. I know you are going through alot right now, and are probably an emotional wreck, but please..try not to let this bother you too much, and please stay. You are a treasured brug family member..It would be terrible if you left. Speaking of emotional wrecks, I have been one myself lately..and this is getting to me..making me cry..you all know I can get to be an emotional mush ball, sorry..
    Please stay Linda..please. ((((hugs))))

I have more to say, but I'll shut up now.

Ok, I did not want to get involved in this but I didn't in any way gather that I was too blame. Ria does not owe me an apology, not to mention that I have gotten to know Ria quite well and she is a good person.

I must say the following, at the risk of alienating myself from this group. please understand, I am just giving an explanation.

I have discussed the cuttings via e-mail with Linda. I hold no animosity towards her, but I was very disappointed that she would send me 5 cuttings, 3 of which were very "iffy" I understand that these were the end of the line, but I feel Linda should not have sent me these. I would have rather not received them, since I have had terrible cutting all winter and allot of rot, as one can expect from pencil thin cuttings. I can only hope that Linda did not realize just how tenuous these cutting were.

I did not want to bring this up, since there are more important things in life, but I feel it is important to explain that this probably has contributed to what I think is rot. There is no sign of a disease from what I can see, and I do not think Linda would send diseased plants. Another possibility for the rot is "sh*t happens"

Again I did discuss this with Linda, and she cleared this up. I don't hold grudges, and people do make mistakes. I especially empathize with Linda's plight, and hope she can save her home investment. This is REAL concern. No big deal about the cuttings.

jesus, I can't believe how absurd this is.

I think maybe what's not being understood is that I saw karyn's post, panicked, and drafted as clear and concise a message as I could in about, what, 20 seconds? I tried to give all the information I could. no, I didn't even bother re-reading it before I posted it, I wanted to get it on there as fast as possible. there was my mistake, I guess? sorry that I was worried for my leafy babies?

at least barry knows me in person and knows I would never blame him or anyone else. stuff just *happens* and that's kind of what makes gardening exciting, I guess the whole keeping you on your toes thing. how COULD it have been anyone's "fault?" it's not like someone wrote the virus dna and deliberately infected my plants with it. I guess I'm just not understanding the blame thing, and it was a total false alarm anyway.

I was pretty excited about my first fall with brugs that I can actually share with people, but if "no one's going to want to trade with me" like daniella said, I guess I'll have to learn to live with it. it's a shame that poor inca sun and friends will be doomed to the compost pile, lol. it's not like I really had any room for more brugs anyway.

so yeah, I really feel like I'm being overly villainized here. I've already explained that no harm was intended a couple times, but no one seems to have bothered to read it. I'm just not going to click on this thread again, heh.

    Ria

Ria, you are not being villianized. We understand you panicked, and wanted reassurance that it wasn't SB.
I think we all understand that in your panick you didnt realize how you sounded. But it did indeed sound that way, even if you didnt mean it to. I dont understand why you cant just apologize? You really hurt Linda's feelings here.

I didn't say that noone is ever going to want to trade with you at all ever again, I didnt make it a law, lol. Let's not be ridiculous here.
I simply said that if you arent careful in how you type, what you say, people are going to think twice about it thats all..maybe they will be worried you will say something and give them a bad rep for nothing. There is no reason to name names unless you find out that yes, indeed it is SB( which it isnt)..then by all means you should tell who you got it from so they can be informed, and can inform others they have shared with. But its not your job to announce who you got it from..it is their job. Unless of course they are irresponsible and you see they aren't letting the others know.
Don't chuck your brugs, I was just letting you know what the consequences could be by not being careful about what you type. I'm sure you'll have some great trades this fall, it is exciting to be able to share, and to give back. And I am glad you can.

Barry, don't be silly! You are not risking being alienated!! Linda sent what she could, and I am sure she wound up giving out alot more than she intended. As she said, she had given away ones that she had wanted for herself..just to make others happy and share..she sacrificed her own.
If I remember correctly, in Linda's post where she offered these cuttings, it was clearly stated that 5 would be sent to each. If she chose to send a couple people more than 5, thats her choice, they are her cuttings. But 5 was what was stated in her thread. Noone should have expected any more than 5.

Barry did you ever stop to think that maybe she thought you'd at least like to give them a try considering that you got in at the tail end and all her other cuttings had already been promised. If I had asked for cuttings I would have been grateful just to have received them and been given a chance to try and root them. If you weren't able to root them no big deal. It's not like you bought them from a nursery or Ebay.

OK--ENOUGH ON THIS SUBJECT! Let's let it go! THIS IS MY FINAL POST TO THIS FORUM!

    Ria
There is no need for an apology from you--I just ask that you use better judgement in the future

I do wish you had handled this with a little more finese. Pointing fingers at people as you have done in the past (one of which was Seedsprout - a very reputable grower who has supplied many gorgeous plants to many of the GW members as well as many other Brug addicts) was very much out of line---In my opinion. Brenda is a top of the line seller and I hope she is back selling soon.
Any time you have a problem with a plant you have received, The proper protocol is to contact the sender (send a picture and describe the problem and discuss the situation amiacably, and try to work it out.)

If I had in fact sent a cutting that wound up with SB to Barry and he passed it on to you, you should have contacted Barry and myself and between the 3 of us it could have been resolved.

If you want to ask the forum their opinion (which I would also DEFINETLY do)--post a picture of the plants and let us know your concerns without going into naming names and pointing accusatory fingers.

I have to date shared over 300 cuttings of the plants from my sons yard, some via mail and many local pickup.
I still am confused as to why Barry wanted cuttings and I went out of my way to accomodate him --- ultimately he wound up giving them to you?

I had a extremely bad day yesterday with a very bad accident and came home to read this post and if I over-reacted-I apologize to everyone! Things have been a tad rough lately!
With that said...I wish the best for all my GW friends and hope you have splendid blooms for years to come
Ria--I sincerly hope you get your Broadmites and Mosaic Virus under control
    Linda
