Camera Talk

Hi everyone.

It has been a long time since I have been around here. I spent the summer moving to a bigger house (with no more garden, yet).

I am looking at digital SLR cameras, and I was wondering if anyone here has used the Nikon D40 to photograph plants and butterflies.

I still own the house where my garden is, and I want to photograph it extensively before I actually sell it.

Also, any other entry level SLRs you may recommend are appreciated.

    Hi Jim.

I have the same question so I hope you get some useful responses. I have a Canon Powershot SX100 with 8.0 mega pixels but I can't seem to find the proper setting for the kind of closeups that some of the people on this forum seem to get. Of course, it could be me as my vision is going from eye problems like macro degeneration or whatever that is. Part of the problem seems to be the symbols which are sooo tiny I can't make them out.

Hopefully, someone out there knows the best way to get those shots. Murray

Murray, look at the back of your camera. At about the 8 o'clock position is a {{gwi:551603}} and a line pointing to the 9 o'clock position. That usually means macro, which is the super closeup setting. The reviews say this camera will let you photograph in macro mode as close as 1 centimeter, which is as close as you're ever going to get to a live butterfly.

Jim, I've admired and even held the Nikon D40, but I haven't made the plunge yet. I'm still satisfied with my 5-year-old Sony DSC-F828.

    Hi Geni,

Thanks so much for the info. I will try it immediately. And I can't believe I called it "macro" when I meant macular. I guess it was appropriate though after all. The camera was a gift from my daughter and son-in-law for Father's Day. I will try the "Macro" setting. Thanks again. Murray

    Hi,

I use a Canon 40D and love it! Hubby has now acquired my older Canon 20D...

and Murray, the macro function is really great but takes a lot of practice. Good luck.

Well, we broke down and bought the Nikon D40. Loving DSLR!
    Still learning, but:

    Ahhhhhhhhh ... camera envy.
Really sharp images, perfect color. Good choice.

Did the camera come with any lenses? What lenses did you buy? Does the camera require special lenses, or will standard Nikon lenses work?

It came with an 18-55 AF lens, as a kit.

Lots of standard lenses will work, but only in manual mode. There is a list of compatable lenses that is way over my head. ;-)

I am hoping to get a big zoom lens when I can afford it. :-)

    Beautiful shots!

i have a canon rebel. while my manual camera is a Nikon, our old canon broke down and the company offered us a really sweet deal as part of a loyalty buy-back program.

however, i am saving up for a Nikon D90.

i have some close ups in my garden using our Canon Powershot SD1000...you can view them at www.mireyaland.blogspot.com
