I grow it in South Raleigh. No particular type. I usually uncover mine from winter mulch about now - it helps me to pull weeds. I find that asparagus likes a weed free bed. I pile on some compost after I'm done harvesting later in the spring - only an inch or so each year. I mulch with leaves or straw during the summer heat - only 4 inches or less. I grow mine in part sun and get a decent harvest but you can expect more from full sun plants.

Get ready to enjoy the wonderful Asparagus after a little bit of a wait. In case no one has told you yet, you need to just let the spears go to fern the first two years and before starting to pick it. I am on my forth year, and I have already had three spears to enjoy this year. Honestly if you have the room I would plant another 20 crowns. I rarely have a bunch to cook at once, but I love just snapping them and eating 2-3 at a time directly. I don't have the room or I would grow more.

Mine grows extremely well. It was a pain not eating any the first two years but I survived. Basically, I top dress with a little compost each year and ensure the area stays weed free.

I just planted 25 crowns from Burpee this week. This is my second bed, first didn't get enough sun. Dug an area 3'x18'x6" deep and tilled in Black Kow after I got the intial bed dug out. So starts the two year waiting game........again.

yhas how I did, added blak kow composted manure (not cheap) and i also added 4 cubic feet of peat moss for the clay. it'll be worth it in two years. my two rows are 2' by 13' each. what varieties did you get from burpee?
