bringing on a dormancy.

my eldest and strongest and first plant, a beautiful dionaea called mortea (my girlfriend named him) has been getting larger and larger and his trap-mouths reddening by the day, sending up more and more shoots and larger traps. this is all fine and good, but its early september and aren't all dionaea due for dormancy within a month or so?

i know its reccomended to trim back the leaves and heads so mold can't form, and to place it in a sealed ziplock bag with little moisture in the bottom of your veggie crisper for a few months (don't think i won't be checking that drawer hourly!), but how to i coax him into dormancy. I've been putting him near the windowsil and leaving it open, hoping that the chill air at night time would signal something, but if anything its only helped him.

any suggestions or further dormancy steps from all the VFT experts out there? Thanks.

How are the winters in your area?, do you get heavy snowfall?
Im in Salt Lake City, what Ive done is to put mine in the unheated garage, it gets to about 42-44 F.
I have it sitting on a windowsill that gets full sunlight most of the day, thus the plant can go dorment naturally if it chooses too.

If you get cold winters mabey you could organise something like this?

I get deadly cold winters, just east of Toronto.

It gets down to about -15 Celcius, which is -10 or so farenheit, i believe, and we get heaps o snow.

    Hi

A Celcius man!!!, lol (Im from South Africa originally so switching to Farenheit is a mission)
Well in farenheit VFT's are meant to be able to tolerate really cold weather, even soil media that is frozen in a big ice cube does not kill the plants.
If you do have a sheltered place that is unheated like a garage that gets light (or you can use artificial lighting) then that would be fine.
    Temps that are good are between 30 to 50 F (-1.1 to 10 C)
What brings on dormency seems to be light (as winter approches there is less light hours in the day) and dropping of temps.
I think the safer option is to let them sit it out in some sheltered area that gets to about the ideal temps 30 to 50 F (-1.1 to 10 C)
Thus you wont need to cut anything off, just prune the dead leaves and dont water as much when they go dorment, you want to keep the soil just barley moist, not constantly moist like in summer.

    Cheers

hello xpochian', from windsor ont Canada . I have growen 6 vft's for 3 year;s . These are green Dantie vaeitey . 3 0lder plant's 4 yr's old plant's/ one 'i just divded a ryzume devision on a 4 year old plant. / The other youing plant was a plantling thats about a yr old / The issue of domancey is a tricky one xpochian . However it is my opsevation that mine seem to be triggered by genetic's other then by tempture or light factors . I had one plant bought in late fall . it had Feb . it had deployed it's summer leaves . The plant was brought out of dormancey in Sept to be sold in jan . Feb . By May it deployed it's authum leave's . Then went dorment in july / the authum leave's are short potoyals [leave blade] . Is halve the size of the summer petoils .The After a short dorancey .It came out in August . to deploy it;s spring leaves . Unlike most plant;s the vft deploy 4 distictive leaf growth . [for each season .] Also the plant can reajust to it;s normal cycal after a yr. The fall leave's in the vft's i find in the typical green and perhaps other varaties . The trap's are redder and larger then even the summer trap's . Depending whether the ryzume is presserd . [ a plant growing in a pot with it;s ryzume pressered will deploy larger traps i think during at season exept spring / the plants are overgrown by taller grassess and flora In the wild. It's leaves are redder to protect what few leaves it grows.IT;S LEAVES ARE LIKE SOLAR PANAL'S Because of putting it;s energy in to the ryzume . it tends to drill down horizontaly deeper in to the soil . So it can be protected from winter temps ,, this i feel is more of a harmonal triggers and not so much based alone on light and tempature / Just as tranzplanting can confuse it;s cycal and the plant put's all it;s growth in to the ryzume instead of leave prodution / . Forcing a V.F.T. to go dorment befor the rysume is triggered hamonaly can kill it .Well I hope this opservation is helpful Xprochian . happy growing and good luck Scott.
