It's probably a type 2 pruning group. If you are getting lousy bloom pruning it as a type 3 I would stop hard pruning it. Type 2's are light prune. I never get good blooms from my type 2 when I hard prune. Don't prune it next spring and see how it blooms for you. I don't know if it is Cezanne. It does look like the photo on clematis on the web.

Cezanne wasn't commercially available six years ago. It was released in 2005 in the UK.

Hard pruning doesn't stop my Type IIs from blooming but everyone is different.

Have you been fertilizing it? Does it get full sun? Watered in summer?

It looks like a new plant to me, not a six year old. How small was it when you planted it? All that hard pruning should have helped it, not hurt it. You should have many more vines than that even if flowering was delayed by hard pruning.

I have had bad luck with clay unless the entire bed was dug up and amended. Clems planted into amended holes surrounded by clay have done nothing for me. Some where in areas hard to dig up but I wanted a vine to grow up and they are still tiny and struggling.....

Thank you buy, it was just a box thingy from wally world. I remember thinking for that small price like 2.98 I'd try it. for a couple of years I didn't prune, then I started researching it and it sounded like I should start pruning. I treated it like a type 3 because not knowing what type it was, it sounded like,from everything I could read about it,that treating a type 2 like a type 3 wouldn't hurt it in fact just the opposite, it would make it flourish. So this year I was starting to get concerned after that small flush,it was supposed to be doing great this year! Previous years it has actually done a little better.
